Calvert-Lewin On Target For Young LionsDominic Calvert-Lewin marked his England Under-21s debut with a goal to earn the Young Lions a 1-1 away draw in Holland. Fresh from helping England Under-20s win the the World Cup in the summer, Calvert-Lewin and fellow Everton teammates Jonjoe Kenny, Kieran Dowell and Ademola Lookman were all handed maiden outings for Aidy Boothroyd’s side. It was Lookman who provided the assist for Calvert-Lewin to open the scoring on 20 minutes, before senior-capped Bart Ramselar responded 10 minutes later to ensure the hosts would take a share of the spoils. The two other Toffees were also heavily involved, with Dowell twice going close with long-range efforts and Kenny clearing off the line late on. A point apiece means the two nations will both have ambitions of topping Group 4 and sealing progress to Italy and San Marino in 2019. Elsewhere, Nathan Broadhead came off the substitutes’ bench for the final 26 minutes of Wales’ 3-0 win over Switzerland in a qualifier for the same competition. And finally, Michael Keane was an unused substitute for the senior England side as Gareth Southgate’s recorded a 4-0 win over Malta in a 2018 World Cup qualifier. Everton FC

Kevin Mirallas is Russia bound after Belgium won 2-1 in Greece to book their place at next year's World Cup finals. Everton attacker Mirallas was back in the Belgians' matchday squad for the match on Sunday night, having missed out altogether on last Thursday's 9-0 trouncing of Gibraltar. And although Mirallas had to settle for a watching brief he saw Belgium make light of a hostile atmosphere in Piraeus, as the two teams traded goals late in the second half. Greece midfielder Zeca squared matters three minutes after Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen's powerful long-range strike had opened the scoring on 70 minutes. The sides were level for only 60 seconds, however, with Romelu Lukaku hitting the winning goal and sealing Belgium's place in next years finals in Russia, with two matches to spare. Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelnburg, meanwhile, was on the bench for Holland as Dick Adovacaat's team shrugged off last week's defeat in France to beat Bulgaria 3-1 in Amsterdam. New Brighton midfielder Davy Propper bagged a double for the hosts, either side of Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben's second-half effort. Georgi Kostadinov was on target for Bulgaria, who slip to fourth in qualifying Group A – one point and one place behind the Dutch. Holland are three points adrift of Sweden in the fight for second spot and a potential play-off berth, with the teams poised to clash in the group's final game next month.

The Blues’ record signing scored both goals in the second half to help his nation up to second in Group I and level with leaders Croatia on 16 points with two games left to play. It was also a positive night for defender Ashley Williams, who captained Wales to a 2-0 away win over Moldova. Chris Coleman’s side leapfrog the Republic of Ireland, who lost 1-0 at home to Serbia, into second place in Group D. Elsewhere, in the Confederation of African (CAF) qualifying section for next year’s tournament in Russia, Idrissa Gana Gueye started for Senegal but a late own goal cost the Lions of Teranga all three points against Burkina Faso as the two sides drew 2-2. Tom Davies was in action for England Under-21s and the Toffees midfielder shone, playing the full game as the Young Lions beat Latvia Under-21s 3-0 at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium in a qualifier for the European Championships. Ademola Lookman and Dominic Calvert-Lewin both came off the bench in the second half for Aidy Boothroyd’s side. And finally, in a qualifier for the same competition, young midfielder Harry Charsley started for Republic of Ireland Under-21s in their 3-0 away win over Azerbaijan in Baku.

Five Everton players have been named in England’s Under-21 squad for European Championship qualifying matches against Scotland and Andorra next month. Dominic Calvert-Lewin retains his place in Aidy Boothroyd’s party after marking his Under-21 debut by scoring in the young Lions’ opening qualifying game away in Holland earlier this month. Tom Davies is included, having also recently won his first cap, in England’s 3-0 victory over Latvia – four days after the 1-1 draw in Holland. Calvert-Lewin’s fellow World Cup winners Ademola Lookman and Jonjoe Kenny – who made his full Everton debut in last week’s Carabao Cup victory over Sunderland – have also been selected. There is a place, too, for Kieran Dowell, currently on loan with Championship team Nottingham Forest and another member of the England Under-20 team that achieved global success back in June. England Under-21s meet their Scottish counterparts at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium on Friday, 6 October, before an away game in Andorra on Tuesday, 10 October. The countries are battling to reach the European Championship finals, which will be jointly hosted by Italy and San Marino in summer 2019. England need to top their six-team group in order to ensure qualification, with play-off spots only available to the four best second-placed finishers across nine groups.

Besic Features In Seven-Goal ThrillerMo Besic came out on the losing side of a seven-goal thriller as Bosnia-Herzegovina's World Cup qualifying hopes were hit by a 4-3 home defeat to Belgium. The Blues midfielder played for more than an hour in Sarajevo against the Red Devils, who have already booked their place for Russia after topping group H. Bosnia went into the clash in second place and looking for a play-off spot but fell behind to Thomas Meunier's fourth-minute goal, only for Haris Medunjanin to grab a quick leveller for the hosts. Edin Visca put Bosnia ahead before the break, before Michy Batshuayi levelled for Belgium, who had Everton forward Kevin Mirallas as an unused substitute. Jan Vertonghen then put the away side 3-2 up, only for Dario Dumic to thump in a header from a corner with eight minutes to play to level the scores. But within two minutes Belgium hit the winner, Yannick Carrasco slotting home at the near post to leave deal a blow to Bosnia's hopes of making next summer's World Cup finals. Elsewhere, in group A, Davy Klaassen came off the bench to help the Netherlands to a 3-1 success away to Belarus - but the qualifying hopes for Oranje are all but over. The game was level at 1-1 when Klaassen was introduced as an 83rd-minute substitute, and seconds later Arjen Robben slotted home a penalty after Bas Dost was fouled in the area. Memphis Depay sealed the win with a stoppage-time free-kick but wins for both Sweden and France means the Netherlands need to beat the former by seven goals in their final group match to make it to Russia next summer. In African qualifying, Idrissa Gana Gueye played the full 90 minutes in Senegal's 2-0 victory at Cape Verde. West Ham's Diafra Sakho opened the scoring on 82 minutes, while Cheikh N'Doye made the points safe in stoppage-time as the Lions of Teranga moved top of group D, four points clear of South Africa.
