Everton Under-21s twice came from behind to win 4-3 against Newcastle United and progress to the last eight of the Premier League Cup. Leandro Rodriguez had cancelled out Emmanuel Riviere's opener but a penalty from Sylvain Marveaux gave the visitors a 2-1 lead going into the break. The impressive Joe Williams then levelled the game just after half-time, before Callum Connolly nodded the young Blues in front. It seemed the game would be destined for extra-time when Callum Roberts equalised late on for United, but a last-gasp goal from substitute Courtney Duffus meant it was the Toffees who secured their passage to the quarter-finals.

A delighted David Unsworth said his Everton Under-21s showed character in spades to come out on the right side of a seven-goal thriller against Newcastle United on Thursday. The Young Blues set up a home tie against Brighton & Hove Albion in the last 16 of the Under-21s Premier League Cup by defeating the Magpies 4-3 on a heavy surface at the Merseyrail Community Stadium. The win, secured thanks to Courtney Duffus’ stoppage-time goal, was even more impressive considering Everton fought back from the early blow of conceding within the opening minute of the match. “I thought we were outstanding. The way the lads went about it in horrendous conditions was fantastic,” coach Unsworth beamed. “The pitch has seen better days but our players didn’t look for excuses. They found a way to win and I am very proud of them. “The character is unquestionable - you cannot fault their desire. They never know when they are beaten and are a special group. “We have a group that gives everything they have got and show their quality as well. They have all got bright futures.” The pick of Everton’s four goals was scored by captain Joe Williams, who bent a 25-yard effort into the top corner to make the scoreline 2-2. In addition to efforts from Williams and Duffus, Leandro Rodriguez and Callum Connolly were also on target. “I’d like to say it’s [Williams’ goal] something off the training ground - but it wasn’t!” Unsworth added. “It was something they came up with themselves. “When we speak to the players individually, do their reviews and go through the games, we look for ways to improve. “We’ve asked Joe if he can contribute with more goals. He was a threat all night - he had a few shots and his goal was top-class.”
