Phil Jagielka not fit for Man City gameRoberto Martinez says Phil Jagielka is close to making a first-team return for Everton but won't be fit enough to start Wednesday's Capital One Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City. The Blues skipper was an unused substitute in Sunday's 1-1 with Spurs and Martinez is hopeful the 33-year-old could be involved against Dagenham and Redbridge in the FA Cup third round next Saturday. "No, he’s not fit to start [on Wednesday]," said the Toffees boss in his post-match press conference. "Today, he would have only been fit for a maximum of 15 minutes. "We’re working really hard with him but today it was just important for us to have that figure of a captain and that feeling of comfort. "He will be part of the squad in the next few games. I think maybe the FA Cup third round is a more realistic aim in terms of starting a game."

You have to ask why Phil was on the bench against Spurs if he isn't fit.
I can only presume it was as a psychological boost to the players to have him attend.
It's vital we go to The Eatihad Stadium still in contention, so hopefully Martinez will have noticed how taking Kone off and bolstering the midfield helped us to deal with Spurs and will employ similar against Man City.

I'd like to think that Besic will get a game but, either Martinez is trying to justify buying Kone and fitting him into the team even though it makes us unbalanced, or he obviously sees something that nobody else sees. Personally, I think he'll start as he's got previous when it comes to picking his favourites regardless of form. We can beat them as I think their average considering the wealth of quality players they have but we're Everton under Martinez so you never know.

The fact bringing an extra midfielder on worked much better will go in one ear and out the other with Martinez. By Wednesday, he'll be putting Kone on the team sheet and Besic will be benched again ................. until we're 4-0 down, and then he might make a change.
