TEAM NEWSRoberto Martinez says Bryan Oviedo will start against Barnsley in the Capital One Cup.
The return of the left-sider is a welcome one as Brendan Galloway is a ‘major doubt’ according to the Blues boss, after the youngster was forced off against Manchester City on Sunday.
Martinez has also admitted that three games in a week means opportunities for those who have played little so far this season. "Certain players have been very unfortunate and unlucky not to be involved in the league games we have had,” he said. “It is an incredible opportunity to show what they can do.”
Barnsley meanwhile have an almost fully fit squad to choose from. James Bree was doubtful for the draw with Bradford at the weekend but made the bench. Ryan Williams missed out but could return.
FORMEverton earned a 2-2 draw against newly promoted Watford on the opening day of the Premier League season before securing a convincing 3-0 win over Southampton at St Mary’s.
And Roberto Martinez’s men will be hoping to return to winning ways when they begin their Capital One Cup campaign at Oakwell, after falling to their first defeat of the season against Manchester City at Goodison Park.
Barnsley, meanwhile, lost their opening game of the 2014/15 campaign at Chesterfield, but went on to secure two victories against Burton Albion and Millwall before their goalless draw with Bradford City at home on Saturday.
The Tykes set up their second round tie with the Blues following a penalty shoot-out win over League One outfit Scunthorpe United.
LAST MEETING Barnsley 2-2 Everton, Saturday 7 February, 1998.
Both sides had to settle for a point as Barnsley and Everton played out a 2-2 draw at Oakwell.
The hosts took the lead through Jan Aage Fjortoft on 24 minutes before Duncan Ferguson equalised for the Blues with a perfectly-placed header.
Everton were ahead five minutes into the second half as Barnsley goalkeeper David Watson failed to get a hand to Tony Grant’s chip.
But Darren Barnard levelled for Barnsley just after the hour mark to give both teams a share of the spoils.
CLASSIC MEETING Barnsley 0-1 Everton, 18 February 1989.
Graeme Sharp scored the only goal of the game to secure a 1-0 victory at Oakwell and send Everton through to the sixth round of the FA Cup.
Tony Cottee flicked on Trevor Stevens cross from the right-hand side and Sharp made no mistake with his finish, firing low into the bottom corner.
Everton went on to reach the final of the FA Cup that year, but suffered a 3-2 defeat to rivals Liverpool.
Josh Scowen
MAN OF THE MOMENT A central midfielder, Josh Scowen (above) joined Barnsley from League Two Wycombe in January 2015, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal.
Scowen made 100 appearances for Wycombe and won both the Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year during his time at Adams Park.
The 22-year-old has started the season in impressive form and scored in Barnsley’s Capital One Cup victory over Scunthorpe.
ONE TO WATCH Daniel Crowley
A technically-gifted playmaker, Daniel Crowley signed for Barnsley in late July 2015 on a six-month loan deal from Premier League side Arsenal.
The 17-year-old signed professional terms with the Gunners in August after joining from Aston Villa last summer.
The Coventry-born youngster produced a number of eye-catching displays for Arsenal Under-18s, netting three times in their Youth Cup campaign and Crowley has impressed since his arrival at Oakwell.
Creating a goal on his debut against Chesterfield, Crowley also inspired the Tykes to a 3-2 away victory at Millwall.
MANAGER Lee Johnson
Barnsley appointed former Oldham manager Lee Johnson as their Head Coach on a three-and-a-half-year contract in February 2015.
Johnson made 450 appearances during his playing career with most notable spells at Yeovil Town and Bristol City and joined the Reds from Oldham Athletic where was First Team Manager.
During his playing career he achieved a total of three promotions and appeared in the Championship Play-Off Final for the Robins against Hull City in 2007.
And after Barnsley suffered relegation from the Championship in 2014, the 34-year-old will be hoping he can be the man to guide the Yorkshire outfit back to the second tier of English football.
