Emma Bissell - Midfielder

On Wednesday 2nd August 2023, Everton announced the signing of midfielder Emma Bissell on a two-year deal until the end of June 2025.

A Manchester City academy graduate, Bissell became the Blues’ third summer signing of the 2023-24 season.

The 21-year-old Bissell joined after two years playing in the United States with college side Florida State Seminoles, having earned Super League experience with Bristol City prior to her switch across the Atlantic.

After impressing Blues manager Brian Sorensen to secure a deal with Everton, Bissell was excited with her new challenge and eager to help take the Club forward.

“It’s amazing to be here,” said Emma. “I’m looking forward to being back in the WSL and testing myself against some of the top players and top teams in the country. Each team I have been at, I’ve learned and added different aspects to my game. I really think that’s benefited me and I’m looking forward to bringing that now back into the WSL and for Everton. I think this club is a great fit for me and how I like to play. It’s a very possession-orientated team and I’m looking forward to playing my part in it.”

Bissell explained one of the key factors in wanting to play for the Blues was to work with boss Sorensen.

Under his guidance, Everton secured a top-six finish in WSL last season with the youngest starting XI on average in the league. With an emphasis on developing young talent, Bissell feels this is the perfect place for her to be.

“I’ve had some really good, positive conversations with Brian,” Emma added. “One of the main things which drew me to Everton was how he likes to play and how he structures his team. Also on an individual level, how he can help develop me and take my game to that next level. You look at the rich history that Everton has when it comes to developing young talent. Jill Scott [at the beginning of her career], last season with Jess Park - that was a key factor in making my decision, seeing the pathway and the potential that there is here as a team. I’m really looking forward to working with Brian and with the rest of the team.”

Manager Sorensen highlighted Bissell’s qualities and what she can bring to his squad.

“She’s super mobile, you can see with her body language and her eyes that she’s really hungry and eager to learn. Emma is a quality player who we were keen to get on board. She’s technically gifted, can beat players with her touch and she can finish. She can play offensive midfielder, where I imagine she sees herself the most, but she is capable of playing in a wider role as well."

“Emma has everything to take on her game and become an even better player. I’m grateful we could agree this deal and I’m sure she will make a big impact with us this season.”

Contracted until: June 2025.
