Williams began his career with West Bromwich Albion, until being released at the age of 16.

Stints at non-league Hednesford Town and then Stockport County followed, and in November 2007, Williams won both the inaugural North-West League Two Player of the Year Award and the North-West Player of the Year Award whilst at County.

Williams joined Swansea on loan in March 2008, 2 days before his first call up with the Welsh national team.

He helped them win the 1st Division title, and promotion to the Championship, and was rewarded a permanent contract, the fee being £400,000, which was a Swansea club record at the time.

He duly collected the Welsh Footballer Of The Year and the Clubman Of The Year awards.

Williams made the Championship PFA Team of the Year on 2 consecutive occasions, in 2009-10 and 2010-11, also surpassing the then club record of 106 consecutive matches.

On 24 September 2011, Williams scored his first ever Premier League goal in a 4–1 loss at Chelsea, after heading in a Mark Gower free kick.

In October 2012, Williams was appointed captain of Wales by Chris Coleman.

*Born in Wolverhampton, Williams qualifies to play for Wales through his maternal grandfather.

Williams won the League Cup with Swansea in 2012-13, and on 19th April 2015, went on to be selected in The Team Of The Decade at the Football League Awards ceremony.

He then captained Wales again at the 2016 European Championship, and in the Quarter Finals headed an equalizing goal, before winning the match 3-1, and progressing to the first Euro Semi Final in Welsh history.

Ashley Williams signed a 3 year deal with Everton on 10th August 2016.

On 3rd July 2018, Williams signed a season long loan with Stoke City, whilst in his final year of contract with Everton, and left the club in June 2019 after his Everton contract expired.

He then signed for Bristol City on 23rd August 2019.

On 26 January 2021, Williams announced his retirement from professional football, aged 36.
