Barry Horne says Everton have recruited a proven top-level defender in Ashley Williams. The former Blues midfielder has followed Williams’ career closely due to their Welsh connections. Horne has described the defender as a “good, old-fashioned centre-half” who will bring consistency to Everton’s rearguard. Williams arrived at Goodison Park on Wednesday from Swansea City – where he had played a major role in the Wales outfit becoming an established Premier League side. “He’s a fabulous good, old-fashioned centre-half,” Horne told evertontv. “He never misses a game - I’ve been watching Swansea for four or five years and I think he’s missed less than a dozen games in his entire time there. “He’s a good leader and talker whose priority is defending. I’m pleased to see he’s come in.” Williams, who skippered Wales to the semi-finals of the European Championships this summer, spent eight seasons at the Liberty Stadium. Horne believes the loyalty shown by the player to his former club warranted his move to the Toffees. “It’s a big move for him - he’s been loyal to Swansea,” added Horne. “I suspect he maybe could have forced a move through last season or the season before as he’s been playing incredibly well for a number of years - but he didn’t. “He’s more than repaid any debt he had to them and it is now the time for him to test himself with a club with slightly higher ambitions.” Former Everton captain Kevin Ratcliffe has also welcomed Williams’ addition to the squad. The 55-year-old, like Williams, also wore the armband for the Wales national team. “He’s a massive addition to the Club,” Ratcliffe beamed. “He’s a great defender - he throws his body on the line. Hopefully it all goes well for Ashley and he settles down quickly. “He’s been massive for Wales as well. He’s been a colossus. You talk about Gareth Bale, you talk about Aaron Ramsey, but, for me, you would miss him just as much.” Everton
