What did you make of this? It's boss. They've put a lot of time and effort into it and I hope he appreciates the support that fans give him at Everton.

I don't see anything different in the way we are playing than when Martinez was boss.

Our fans are their own worst enemies as Ross is fastly becoming an ordinary player and anybody would think he was the equivalent of Gerard for Liverpool the way they go on.

Ronald Koeman was encouraged by Idrissa Gana GueyeRonald Koeman was encouraged by Idrissa Gana Gueye’s first appearance in an Everton shirt as the Blues ended pre-season with a 1-0 defeat to Espanyol at Goodison. After completing his move from Aston Villa on Tuesday, Gana went into the base of the midfield alongside Gareth Barry as the Toffees continued preparations for next weekend’s Premier League curtain-raiser against Tottenham Hotspur. Gana conceded the penalty that led to the decisive goal of the game in the opening stages, but the 26-year-old’s all-round performance encouraged Koeman - and the Goodison crowd, who warmly applauded as he was withdrawn on 71 minutes. “I don’t think the foul was inside the penalty area,” Koeman told evertontv. “I thought Idrissa’s performance was positive. He took too much of a risk in the action that led to the penalty - but he stole a lot of balls in the midfield, he’s fast and he presses well. I thought his debut was impressive. “We need him because he is a different midfield player from the ones that we have here. “We had some good offensive actions in the first half and I think their goalkeeper did well, even saving [Ross Barkley’s] penalty. It made the second half a little more difficult because they were defending their lead and put a lot of players behind the ball. “Then you need that high quality offensively to create and that was not the case in the second half. The Everton boss was also buoyed by the return of captain Phil Jagielka, who played his first 45 minutes of pre-season after overcoming a hamstring injury. Koeman added: “It was very good to have Phil Jagielka back in the squad. “If you miss two or three weeks of pre-season then it’s difficult but experienced players know the game and he showed a good mentality and performance today.” The Blues boss also confirmed Romelu Lukaku required three stitches to a cut sustained midway through the second half, but described it as “nothing serious”.
