Everton boss upset by Diego Costa tauntsChelsea's win at Everton had pretty much everything else, so why not add some controversy to the mix? It will, however, have to be controversy of the very lame sort: Roberto Martinez is angry at Diego Costa for being a big old meanie to Seamus Coleman after the Toffees defender turned an Eden Hazard cross into his own net. Yes, that's exactly as silly as it sounds: I think there are certain foreign players who, when they come to the Premier League, they need to understand the ethics. It is a completely different culture and the last thing you want to be is disrespectful from a player to another player, even if he is on the opposing team. I am sure he will learn that very quickly. The last thing I would do myself is fall into a trap and be disrespectful that way. Source: Guardian. Which ... well, let's ignore the fact that Seamus Coleman was doing his best to get Diego Costa booked all match, finally getting the striker to snap a little before the aforementioned own goal. Let's also ignore the fact that Tim Howard's reaction to the taunt was to grab Diego Costa by the neck. Those facts are interesting but ultimately irrelevant. The key point is this: footballers shouldn't expect not to be mocked by their fellow professionals. I'm not talking abuse, of course (especially racist/homophobic abuse, a scourge that should be stamped out of the match), but laughing at someone after they've conceded an own goal? I honestly can't think of a better time to laugh at someone. I don't want Diego Costa to respect Seamus Coleman when he's playing. I want him to annihilate him. And if Roberto Martinez thinks that teasing someone after scoring an own goal is somehow going too far, I have the following message. Source: weaintgotnohistory

I'd love to think this would be a wake up call but I don't think we have leaders on the pitch. I don't see real characters that would blast a player for not doing their job. Jags isn't the one, in my opinion. He just doesn't look like a fighter. We need 1 or 2 of those in the dressing room. We need someone that the other players will be afraid to go into the dressing room to face. We're way to nicey-nicey and I can't stand it. I'm hoping this will be Jags' and Distin's last season and Roberto will try and build a team from the back next season.

The problem is when you look at Martinez's signings so far, they are all hit or miss for one reason or another, and I think it needs it's own thread.

He addressed the fact that defensively, under Moyes, we were pretty solid most of the time but we lacked that attacking intent. Unfortunately, we have gone the other way this season and look very good going forward but shit at the back. I can't work out why because it's the same defence. Maybe Jags and Distin haven't got the legs. I can't blame RM for addressing the attacking side of our team in terms of signings as I would never have imagined we would have been this crap in defence.

Moyes had us playing some fantastic football towards the end though, and I think many fans have conveniently forgotten that. As much as Martinez has us passing about, we had the Baines / Pienaar thing going long before Martinez, and Coleman is the work of Moyes too, as is Mirallas. We were compared to Barcelona on occasion by people like Merson, Jol, Hodgson, so it's important to realize that yes, we are perhaps more consistent in our attacking flair, but our defence is going backwards. Last season we were strong defensively, but we were still set in Moyes' ways. I'd actually welcome Moyes back as a number 2, not that it would happen, as I think the vision of both men would compliment each other.
