Three first half goals consigned Everton Under-23s to defeat against Hertha Berlin II at Goodison Park. Sidney Friede opened the scoring quarter of an hour into the Premier League International Cup contest, reacting quickly to stab home from a corner. Friede had earlier hit a post, but was on hand to double the German’s lead minutes after his first. Sinan Kurt did well to get by Matthew Foulds and he cut the ball back for Friede to slam past Mateusz Hewelt without breaking stride. Fabio Mirbach then added a third on 35 minutes as the Blues found themselves with plenty to do. But after the break they made the perfect start to their fightback – Gethin Jones cut in from the right to fire a left-footed shot past Ruben Aulig. However Hertha nullified the Toffees and secured the victory that sees them join Athletic Bilbao on four points after the Spanish side beat Reading 3-2. Everton now sit third. Everton FC

David Unsworth says an ‘awful’ first half gave Everton Under-23s a mountain to climb in their Premier League International Cup defeat to Hertha Berlin II. Having beaten Reading in their opening fixture in the competition, the young Blues welcomed their German counterparts to Goodison Park on Wednesday night. But a brace from Sidney Friede and a third from Sinan Kurt gave the visitors a half-time lead that the hosts could not recover from. “First half, we were awful,” Unsworth admitted to evertontv. “We made 10 changes to give the lads who haven’t been playing an opportunity to shine and make our decisions tough. I was really disappointed in the first-half performance where we have given away three goals and its game over. “At half time, we made some changes and did a lot better. We scored our goal but you can’t give any team a three-goal start, particularly a decent side and Hertha were a good team.” It was skipper Gethin Jones who fired home a cool left-foot finish five minutes after the interval but, try as they might, the Toffees couldn’t build the momentum to trouble Hertha further. A frustrated Unsworth hopes his young side took plenty away from the experience. “Hertha started really well – quick, pacey, kept the ball well and we couldn’t get anywhere near them,” he added. “We worked on a few sessions based around their style of play so we knew what to expect, but we just didn’t compete. “It is not easy for me to say that, but we did show a reaction and the young players who have got an opportunity will learn from it. If they want to get into our Under-23s team then they have got to learn from it.” Everton FC
