Just because Lukaku actually managed to do his job for once doesn't mean much. He'll need to keep scoring if he wants to win back the fans. Best striker in Europe? WTF. What about all the bad games? Barkley was so bad he was subbed off at half time but it's like fans don't like to criticize him. If he has a good game he gets called a diamond so how come when he's bad nobody mentions it? I was happy with the second half but the first was painful. I don't want to sound negative but as good as the table is we still haven't played a good game in the league. I don't think I'm papering over the cracks with Lukaku when I'm saying that he's still got lots of stuff he needs to work on. He scored loads of goals at a young age in one of the most difficult leagues in the world, not just Europe, so if that doesn't merit qualified praise then I don't know what does. He could lunge in to tackles and win the crowd, and spend time out injured; Lineker never tackled anyone in his life, but was a crowd favourite. depends what we want: a striker that puts a shift in every week and gets a dozen goals; or one that is erratic at worst in terms of effort and gets us 24 a season. I'd like both, but I'm realistic to know that ain't gonna happen. As for Ross, you have a point. He was poor on Monday, possibly trying to do the harder things rather than the easy ones, and he needs careful management as to how to get the best from him. My guess would be he's an arm around the shoulder type player rather than a hairdryer, so let's see how RK handles it.

I judge players on each game and not really one for labelling them. Players at this level shouldn't have bad games. If they do that's what subs are for and the next player gets a go. I don't like it when players have guaranteed places. One or two positions need fair competition.

You can only beat what's in front of you. Admittedly there are bigger games to come. But the signs are positive.

I don't like it when players have guaranteed places. One or two positions need fair competition. Players at this level will ALWAYS have bad games, even Messi does! The trick is not to have too many, or for the manager to give you a time out if you do, or, as with Barkley, have a nightmare first half. Martinez would have stuck to the same team for at least 60 mins, so we have a refreshing change of approach, but my only nagging doubt is whether the tough approach with Ross will make him too scared to try anything and so lose his edge. We'll see. If that happens, then I'm afraid we transfer him he's not going to make it!

Ross needs special treatment by the sounds of it but I don't see enough A game to justify it. Any player earning 100k a week should be more consistent.
