Dominic Calvert-Lewin says a first senior squad inclusion has served as further motivation in his burgeoning Everton career. It has been a busy few days for the young striker, who gained his first taste of Premier League football since his summer move from Sheffield United when he was named on the bench in Sunday’s game against West Ham United at Goodison. Although an unused substitute, Calvert-Lewin was naturally delighted at the opportunity, admits he has the taste for it and now hopes for further opportunities if he continues impressing for the Under-23s. “That was a great experience,” he told evertontv. “I was really happy to be involved and hopefully I can kick on from here. “I came from a first-team environment at Sheffield United so I knew a little of what it would be like. I had a little bit of nerves before I arrived but as soon as you get into the changing room it goes back to business and you do what you always do and settle into your routine. “I trained with the first team for most of last week and I got the call on Friday to say I would be on the bench. I was delighted to hear that and I thought I did okay in training. Hopefully I can keep doing what I’m doing and I can get a few more chances.” A little over 24 hours later and Calvert-Lewin was lining up for Everton Under-23s and he admits he has relished pitting his wits against established Premier League stars in recent weeks. The 19-year-old striker has lined up against French internationals Mamadou Sakho and Kurt Zouma in his last two games, against Liverpool and Chelsea respectively. While he concedes he found both experiences tough, he insists he will have taken plenty from his two tussles against two players who have performed at the highest level. “I played against Sakho last week and then Zouma on Monday – who am I going to play against next week?!” he joked to evertontv. “Zouma is a good player and one who has played at a really high level. It’s a good test and I like playing against players like that. It allows you to measure yourself and see where you are at as a player at that moment. “You can only learn from these types of game. I might not know it at the time but I will be picking things up and developing all the time, which is crucial. These guys are Premier League players and I thought I did ok against Chelsea. It was a bit frustrating at times but we’re now only focused on the next game.”
