Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce goalkeeper Fraser Forster has signed a new five-year contract.I think there's real ambition around the place and it's good to be a part of it."
The stopper, who has impressed during his two seasons with Saints so far, today put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at St Mary’s until 2021. The goalkeeper joins defender Virgil van Dijk and James Ward-Prowse, who have also signed new deals in the last week, in committing his long-term future to Saints. Forster joined in the summer of 2014 from Scottish champions Celtic, and made an immediate impression on the south coast as he helped Ronald Koeman’s side make a blistering start to the 2014/15 campaign. The goalkeeper was an ever-present for Koeman’s men, making 37 appearances in all competitions, until he suffered a serious knee injury in a 2-0 win against Burnley in April 2015. A nine-month rehabilitation programme saw the goalkeeper make a sooner-than-expected return in January 2016, as he kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win against Watford at St Mary’s. The shut-out would start a run of six straight clean sheets for Forster and Saints, as the goalkeeper wrote his name into the club’s history books by going 708 minutes without conceding a goal. Speaking about Forster’s new deal, Executive Director of Football Les Reed said: “Since his arrival in 2014, Fraser has proved himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, and has been an integral part of the club's success over the last two seasons. "The way in which Fraser returned from his long-term injury earlier this season further highlighted his quality, as he wrote his name into the club's record books. "At 28, Fraser will only get better and we firmly believe he will be a key factor in the club's future success and of the national team's plans for many years to come. We're delighted he sees his long-term future with Southampton and that we share the same ambitions." Forster told Southampton's official YouTube channel: “"I'm delighted. It's been another good year for the club and I think there's real ambition around the place and it's good to be a part of it, so to commit and sign a new deal is unbelievable and I'm just looking forward to getting stated again. "Every player wants to keep moving forward in their career and for me especially I'm very ambitious, and I think at this club there is that real ambition and desire to keep moving forward and improve year-in, year-out. "If you look at just last week with Virgil signing his new deal, that was obviously positive news and after last year and then this year it's obvious things are moving forward and hopefully we can keep doing that in the future."
