Everton Under-21s boss David Unsworth hailed Kieran Dowell’s 40-yard lob against Southampton as one of the best goals he has ever witnessed. The young Blues made it four consecutive wins in the league with a 3-1 triumph over the Saints at Finch Farm on Monday evening.Brendan Galloway and Sam Byrne struck to give the hosts a deserved two-goal advantage at the interval, before Dowell extended the lead with a sublime long-range effort in the second half. After playing in a wider role in recent weeks, Ormskirk-born Dowell excelled in a more central position on the night, capping his performance with a goal that left manager Unsworth purring at the full-time whistle. “I was delighted to be on the right side of the pitch to witness Kieran’s goal because it’s one of the best goals I have ever seen,” he told evertontv. “It was absolutely outstanding. He gave a great performance in a bit of a different role to what he has been playing recently and he showed some great touches just off the striker. “That goal alone was worth coming to watch the game for. It was great execution. We see that sort of stuff in training every day and now he’s bringing it into the games and producing moments of magic like that consistently, which you have to do as a young player. “I thought, as a team, we were terrific from start to finish. We got ourselves two goals up but could - and probably should - have been out of sight. “Southampton came back in the second half and got a goal, but we created numerous chances to score a bagful of goals ourselves.” The Under-21s climbed to third in the league table after the victory - and Unsworth believes developing a winning habit is vital at the players’ current stage of development. He added: “It’s a good habit to have. As much as it is about their individual development, we do have a strong team ethic and it’s something we preach a lot about - doing a job for the team and being a good individual within a team. “Every good team has a good structure off the ball and every good team has individual players, but you can’t [perform] without the help of your teammates and that’s something we stress to them a lot. “I know our Under-21s can beat anyone in this league, but it’s not just about winning the games, it’s about those lads showing what they’re about and getting them in and around our first team.”

Everton Under-21s midfielder Kieran Dowell says he was forced to literally think outside the box after a series of superb saves convinced him to attempt an audacious 40-yard lob against Southampton on Monday. The 18-year-old netted to add to earlier strikes from Brendan Galloway and Sam Byrne as David Unsworth’s side recorded a 3-1 victory over the Saints at Finch Farm. Unsworth later hailed the awareness and execution of Dowell’s stunning attempt, but the man himself remained typically modest about his goal. “The goalkeeper [Paulo Gazzaniga] made a few worldie saves before it, so we needed something else - something you wouldn’t expect - to go in,” Dowell told evertontv with a broad smile. “There were four or five shots where you thought they were nailed on goals, but he somehow kept them out. He had a great game. “It was off the cuff really, but I saw him off his line and went for it. I didn’t really see a pass in front of me, so I thought ‘why not?’, tried it and luckily it came off. “At 2-0, the next goal is always important and the team needed it, so I was really pleased.” After missing around a third of the current campaign with an ankle ligament injury, Dowell insists his focus is fixed on playing as much as possible between now and the end of the season. The win over Southampton was the young Blues’ fourth league victory in a row and the Ormskirk-born youngster says he is delighted to be back part of a rapidly maturing team. “I feel like I’m up to 100 per cent again now,” he added. “I’ve got loads of games under my belt, so I’m feeling good. “But I want to make up as much game time as I can. Whether that’s here or out on loan, I just want to be out there playing. “We’re doing really well in the league and we feel we can beat anyone who we come up against. “It’s been a bit of a snowball effect. We came close to relegation last season, so the first aim was to stop being in that position again and it’s gone from there. “We’re doing whatever we can to get to the top now.”
