David Unsworth saluted his side’s resilience as Everton Under-21s extended their unbeaten run to seven games with victory over Manchester United.
Goals from Mason Holgate and Calum Dyson secured a fourth straight win against a United side in similar form.
But it was the defensive display that particularly pleased Unsworth.
He told evertontv: “United have great individual players who at any time can have a magic moment and the ball can be in the back of your net.
“But the back four, the keeper and our midfield defended brilliantly. The way we helped each other on the pitch was fantastic.
“There were some great performances but I couldn’t really single anybody out."
The swirling winds around Finch Farm made the game all the trickier but Unsworth was delighted with the display given the weather conditions.
“It was a different type of game,” he added. “We were against a hurricane at times! But it was a fantastic, resilient performance. It was backs to the wall at times, and we had to show commitment to the cause and show tremendous work ethic. On top of that, we scored two great goals and earned a fantastic clean sheet.
“We had the wind first half but then had to battle against it after the break so it really was a top performance. In the second half, funnily enough the wind helped us play the way we normally play. The way we defended as a team was outstanding.
“The lads are in great form at the moment and they are showing it against top teams.”
