Antolin Alcaraz has played his first 45 minutes of football since the start of the season.
The Paraguay international has not appeared in a blue shirt since the pre-season encounter at Accrington Stanley in July. A hamstring injury has sidelined him for almost four months but after an extended rehabilitation programme, the 31-year-old central defender was given a 45 minute run-out for Alan Stubbs' reserve side in a friendly against Sheffield Wednesday. Manager Roberto Martinez is delighted the former Wigan defender is in contention again as the Blues approach the hectic festive period. He told evertonfc.com: "We had a very good exercise on Monday, a friendly behind closed doors against Sheffield Wednesday. "Antolin played 45 minutes and showed no signs of not being fully fit, which is very pleasing. He has had a really difficult time and has been fighting strongly to help the team, and I don’t think it will be too long until we see Antolin available and in a position where he can help in this heavy period." Tony Hibbert, who has also been fit again in the last month after a spell on the treatment table, was involved in the game whilst youngster John Stones took advantage of 45 minutes of action to build up his match fitness. Martinez added: "We have 10 games in six weeks so we need everyone ready and available. It was great to see the likes of Antolin, Tony Hibbert and John Stones showing that they are desperate to play." With Leighton Baines facing a spell out with a broken toe, additional defensive options will please the manager.

I'm eager to see this bloke play as heard good things but not sure he will get his chance in the first team unless we get injuries.

I'm eager to see this bloke play as heard good things but not sure he will get his chance in the first team unless we get injuries. Martinez was implying he doesn't want to rush him into any matches and will need him over the festive period. What friendly did the club play behind closed doors? Who against?
