Everton Under-21s finally return to action against Manchester City on Monday evening. The Young Blues travel to the City Football Academy for a 7pm kick-off - their first match since drawing 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur in mid-December.
Everton’s wait for a match has been due to the poor weather, with the home fixture against Newcastle United twice falling to the wet conditions that have recently hit the north-west. Monday’s meeting with Manchester City could see a first official outing for new signing Matty Foulds, who completed his transfer from Bury when the transfer window re-opened at the start of January. Defender Foulds featured in the draw with Spurs before Christmas but on that occasion he played on a ‘trial’ basis as per competition rules. Foulds says he has settled in well at Everton and is particularly enjoying working with Blues Under-21s coach David Unsworth. “He is like my old coach at Bury [David Flitcroft]. He demands the best out of you and, for me, that’s the best way to learn. “He played left-back and centre-back at the highest level, so his experience will be valuable.” Everton and Manchester City head into Monday’s match level on 14 points, with the hosts sitting one place above the Young Blues in fifth, due to their superior goal difference. There will be live updates from the City Football Academy on the official Everton Twitter account, with a match report appearing here on the official website shortly after the full-time whistle.

Unsy: One Of Our Best DisplaysThree points, a clean sheet and an accomplished all-round performance was the ideal way to kick-off 2016 for Everton Under-21s, according to coach David Unsworth. After nearly a month without a fixture, the Young Blues picked up where they left off before the festive break on Monday evening with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City. Kieran Dowell’s goal at the start of the second half proved to be the difference between the sides at the Academy Stadium in Eastlands - and it means Unsworth's young men at now unbeaten in their last five games. It terms of endeavour and productivity, the Under-21s boss felt it was one of his team’s strongest displays of the season to date. “We thoroughly deserved the victory - we were fantastic from start to finish,” he told evertontv. “We limited a very good Manchester City side to one chance in each half. “The way we went about our jobs and the way the team played, with the work-rate and desire for the players to help their mate next to, in front of and behind them, it was probably the best we have been. “Our team shape was fantastic - and it needs to be when you play good teams like Manchester City, who have technically excellent players that can hurt you at any moment. “We played as well - it wasn’t a backs-to-the-wall 90 minutes. We had our moments where we could and should have scored a second or third goal.” Everton’s play both with and without possession was alert and crisp, even though it was their first fixture since mid-December. “The way we train, there will never be any signs of rustiness because the lads work really hard,” added Unsworth. “It was nice to give them a few days over Christmas where they could recharge because we have had a game almost every week since the start of the season, which is what I wanted. “It showed tonight because their fitness levels were amazing.” Everton Under-21s are next in action on Thursday evening at Southport, with Newcastle United the visitors for the twice rearranged Premier League Cup last-16 tie.
