We're counting down the days!
Gibson's knee operation a success, reveals Everton manager Martinez
Darron Gibson's operation on his injured knee has been a success, Everton manager Roberto Martinez has revealed.
The Toffees midfielder injured his cruciate ligament during the Republic of Ireland's recent World Cup qualifier against Kazhakstan last week having just returned to the Everton squad after recovering from a different injury.
Gibson is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines but Blues boss Martinez says his recent operation went well: 'Darron Gibson has had his operation and we are now counting down the days.'
Unfortunate: Gibson had only just returned to the Everton squad when he was injured playing for Ireland
Pleased: Manager Roberto Martinez revealed the club are 'counting down the days' for Gibson's return
'It was very successful and we are very positive.'
With Gibson unavailable, Everton will have to rely on summer signing Gareth Barry to pull the strings in the Blues' midfield.
Martinez has been delighted with the 32-year-old's contribution at Goodison Park so far this season and believes Barry is playing with the enthusiasm of a player who has only just started his football career.
'He is someone who breathes the game. He is playing with the enthusiasm and desire of an 18-year-old. We are enjoying having him here.'
However, the Spaniard thinks it is too soon to look at signing Barry, on loan from Manchester City, on a permanenet deal.
'I wouldn't think about starting that (talks over a move) yet. It is too early,' said Martinez.
