Everton Under-21s were cruelly denied a first league win of the season by a late Leicester City equaliser. The Blues looked likely to be rewarded for a superb away display with victory as they resolutely defended Conor Grant’s first half goal. But when Hamza Choudhury’s pass squirmed through to the back post, it fell perfectly for left-back Callum Elder, who thumped past Mateusz Hewelt. It was harsh on the Toffees, who could have had further goals through Joe Williams. The young midfielder had the game’s first real chance on 20 minutes as he saw a thunderous volley deflected wide. Simonas Stankevicius fired an effort wide in response, and the Foxes went even closer when Michael Cain struck the post. But inside a minute after he had done so, Grant let fly from 25 yards to put the visitors ahead. Sam Byrne had a goal ruled out for offside after the break, while Leicester skipper Jak McCourt dragged an effort wide. But the Foxes would find an equaliser, as Elder popped up at the back post to smash home on 82 minutes. Hewelt saved from substitute Keenan King but it was Williams again who would go agonisingly close to snatching victory. Antony Evans found him in space on the edge of the box but the home goalkeeper sublimely saved his shot. Frustrating yes, but the Blues can take plenty of positives ahead of their opening game of the Premier League International Cup against Tottenham Hotspur.
