Everton Under-21s boss David Unsworth believes a win in the mini-derby would provide the perfect tonic after an opening day disappointment against Tottenham Hotspur. Sam Byrne’s strike was not enough as the young Blues fell to a 4-1 defeat in the curtain-raiser of their 2015/16 Barclays U21 Premier League campaign. The Toffees now face Liverpool at the Merseyrail Community Stadium in Southport this Wednesday (19 August, 7pm) and Unsworth has warned his side that they must show they are able to execute their gameplan in the intense environment of an all-Merseyside clash. “It is probably the perfect game for us after a disappointing performance,” he told evertonfc.com. “The lads won’t need firing up for the game - if anything, it’s probably the other way and a case of tempering them down slightly. “We’ve got an awful lot of local lads in the team and we have to make sure we temper down that fieriness so we can still do our jobs. “Of course we’ll get up for the game and that is never a problem, but we don’t want to to be playing with eight or nine men. “These lads have to learn that now. They are going from Academy football to men’s football and they need to control their emotions in order to control the game.” The mini-derby kicks off at 7pm, with tickets FREE for 2015/16 Season Ticket holders and £5 for adults and £3 for concessions otherwise.
