Everton legend Duncan Ferguson set for pre-season testimonial with Villarreal EVERTON are set to hand club legend Duncan Ferguson a testimonial before the start of the new season.Spanish side Villarreal have been pencilled in to provide the opposition for Ferguson, now a member of Roberto Martinez’s backroom staff. The former Scottish striker had two spells covering a decade as a player at Everton, stretching from 1994-98 and then 2000-06, and establish himself as a crowd favourite. His time was interrupted by an £8m move to Newcastle. Ferguson, 43, returned to Goodison Park in 2012 working voluntarily as a coach, but has quickly progressed and was appointed first team coach by Martinez in February 2014. The game at Goodison could take place on Sunday, August 2 – just 24 hours after Everton are due to travel to Leeds United in a friendly ahead of the new campaign. The visit of Villarreal will conjure memories of Everton’s failure to reach the Champions League in 2005 when Ferguson had a header controversially ruled out in the second leg. (Awaiting confirmation)

Seems a v random testimonial I thought the same. It will be interesting who plays and whether it will be old school players or current. The date is the exact same date as the match against The New Saints and the day after Leeds so all seems a bit strange.

Why a testimonial now? Didn't he get one when he was nearing the end then?
