Roberto Martinez resigns as Wigan managerRoberto Martinez has resigned as manager of Wigan. The Spaniard led the club to an historic FA Cup triumph this season but could not prevent relegation from the Premier League. The decision has been announced after 39-year-old Martinez held talks with Wigan chairman Dave Whelan in the past week. Martinez, who joined Wigan in June 2009, is one of the leading contenders to take over at Everton. "He wanted permission to move so I've given that," said Whelan. "He has 12 months left on his contract, so whoever comes in for him must pay the remainder of his contract. "He feels he's not the man to lead us back into the Premier League. I've got to accept what he feels. "He loves Wigan and the fans. We have to move on now and want applications for the job."
