Leon Osman still has a crucial part to play for Everton despite the addition of two central midfielders on deadline day, insists Roberto Martinez . The veteran was a virtual ever-present for the Blues last season, and has started every game so far this term under the new boss. Martinez moved to clinch the signing of Gareth Barry on loan from Manchester City on September 1, and the £13m capture of James McCarthy to add extra competition in central midfield, but insists Osman’s experience and attitude is invaluable. He said: “Leon is more than just a footballer. He represents Everton. He’s an incredible guide to the young players. “I want the strongest squad we can have and then it’s down to the performances of the players and Leon has been outstanding this season.” The Blues currently have competition in every department after a shrewd navigation of the summer transfer window, and Martinez is adamant that only form will decide who makes his starting selection. That, he emphasised, is particularly relevant to Osman and the clubs other central midfielders who were on board before the new arrivals. He added: “Nobody has a label of what their role is going to be at the club. I don’t sit down at my desk and pick the team – I allow football to make that decision “Leon has been fantastic so far and it’s someone else’s job to try and get him out of that position. “His influence in the team is beyond playing or not playing.” Source: Echo

It sounds like a bit of support for Ozzie as he hasn't exactly been on fire lately. Fair play to Bobby.

I'm all for an arm around a struggling player as long as they don't try to sell it as legitimate feelings to the fans. We have options if he can't produce. I often wonder if he might make a good striker.
