David Unsworth yesterday declared he was “back home” after returning to Everton FC as the club’s new under-21 assistant manager.
Unsworth, who won the FA Cup with the Goodison outfit in 1995, will be number two to Alan Stubbs in helping encourage the next generation of talent.
The 39-year-old made more than 300 appearances in two separate spells at Everton with a player.
He started his coaching career at Preston North End before moving on to Sheffield United, who were among one of his several other clubs.
And Unsworth, himself a product of the Everton youth system, said: “It means the world to me, this club. I came through the ranks at Everton and I lost count of how many seasons I spent here.
“Every time you go back to Goodison you’re made to feel very welcome. You’re never forgotten as a player here and there’s not many clubs you can say that about.
“So it’s great to be back but I’m here to do a job, I’m here to work and I’m here to pass on anything I can to these young players.
“I’ll be working my socks off for Alan Stubbs and the Under-21s – and the Academy as and when I’m needed – and that’s a nice feeling.
“It’s definitely a case of being back home and it’s an absolute honour to be asked.
“It feels like the first day back at school again and I’ve seen plenty of familiar faces already. To be honest, it feels like I’ve never been away.”
Unsworth fills a role made vacant by the departure earlier this year of David Weir to become manager at Sheffield United.

Loved Unsworth when he was with West Ham as well , great , honest player , it was a shame his Mrs was home sick and he went to Aston Villa .
Saw Stubbs on the telly the other day , looks great now he's over his problems , good luck to both of them .

David Unsworth was very underrated by the England manager at the time , he only earned 1 England cap when he should have been a regular . Although he was only at West Ham for a season or so , he made a huge difference to our defence , I thought he was a tremendous player , good luck to him and the Everton Youth .
