Swansea too good for 10-man Hull as Bafétimibi Gomis strikes twice
Swansea 3 - 1 HullSung-Yeung Ki 18 Bafetimbi Gomis 37 Bafetimbi Gomis 90 +0:43 Paul McShane 50 Bafétimbi Gomis scores Swansea's second goal against Hull City in the Premier League match Steve Bruce has got far more to worry about than his planned diet after his 10-man Hull team saw their winless run extended to five games with defeat at the Liberty Stadium. A lifeless first-half display saw the relegation-threatened Tigers trail to goals from Ki Sung-yueng and Bafétimbi Gomis against a Swansea side who rarely threatened to get out of second gear. There was at least an improvement from the visitors after the break, but the momentum of Paul McShane’s strike was quickly sapped by a red card awarded to midfielder David Meyler for a reckless challenge on Swansea full-back Kyle Naughton, with Gomis completing their misery in stoppage time. Bruce’s men have now picked up just two points from a possible 15 and remain three points above the drop zone with fellow strugglers Burnley and Sunderland yet to play this weekend. Hull’s run in includes games against Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Southampton and it is hard to see them picking up any significant points in those fixtures on this evidence. From the off there was a lack of energy about the Humberside outfit, despite this being a genuine opportunity against a Swansea side with little to play for thanks to their comfort in the middle of the Premier League table. Hull had plenty of the ball, but few men willing to make the running and ensure possession was made the most of. They fell behind in the 18th minute. Jonjo Shelvey’s strike could have been held or pushed around the post by Allan McGregor, instead he pushed the ball out to the feet of Ki, who accepted the invitation to score his seventh goal of the season with alacrity. Gomis was beginning to make his presence felt and, after giving Hull two warning of his threat, doubled the Swansea lead in spectacular fashion seven minutes before the break. The Frenchman was offside when Naughton headed the ball into the area, but Alex Bruce and Robbie Brady’s bungled defensive clearance brought him back into play to fire a stunning aerial volley high into the net. Bruce sent his side out early for the second half with a flea in their collective ears and he got a response when McShane prodded home Alex Bruce’s flick-on from a Brady free-kick. But no sooner had Hull hopes risen than they were dented by Meyler. The midfielder made contact with the ball first but his studs first tackle into Naughton’s shin left referee Andre Marriner in little option but to show him a red card. Abel Hernández could still have salvaged a point for the away team, but failed to connect with McShane’s cross, and Gomis showed him how it should be done as he finished a stoppage time break out by delicately lofting over McGregor.
