Paul Scharner claims he could have added to the former Wigan contingent at Everton
Paul Scharner has claimed he turned down the offer of a three-year deal from Everton.
The Hamburg midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan with former club Wigan Athletic, then managed by current Blues boss Roberto Martinez, where he was part of their FA Cup-winning side in May but was unable to prevent them falling out of the Premier League.
Scharner, who can also play in defence, has alleged that he received an approach about a possible move to Goodison Park in May but spurned the offer on the understanding that the Bundesliga outfit were planning to give all players at the Imtech Arena a clean slate.
And while the 33-year-old is determined to fight for his place at Hamburg, who this week expressed an interest in Everton striker Nikica Jelavic, he admits a return to England, where he also plied his trade with West Brom, would have been a more appealing prospect.
He said: "I could've earned twice as much in England. In May, after the FA Cup triumph with Wigan, Everton offered me a three-year deal.
"But at this point in time I had the announcement that in Hamburg everyone starts at zero."
"I have not been given fair opportunity by the club. Without a fair chance to prove myself I will not be leaving by choice. I am an experienced player. I know anything can happen throughout a campaign", he added.
