Chris Long scored his first goal for Championship outfit Brentford on Saturday afternoon. In what was the final match of the 19-year-old’s initial loan spell with the Bees, he tapped home from close-range in the 90th minute to put the seal on a fine 3-1 victory over promotion hopefuls Bournemouth. Long has since had his stay at Griffin Park extended for another month. It was a superb result for the Bees, considering it followed the announcement that manager Mark Warburton would be leaving in the summer. The win also kept alive Brentford’s push for Premier League football – they are now only one point adrift of the play-offs and five points off the second automatic promotion place. Also in the Championship, Conor McAleny came off the bench to play the last 20 minutes in Cardiff City’s scoreless draw away at Huddersfield Town. The Welsh club are now seven matches without a win and occupy 19th position. In League One, Matthew Pennington played in Coventry City’s 2-2 draw at Sheffield United – a result which effectively cost Steven Pressley his job as manager of the Sky Blues. The 10-man Blades scored twice in the last 12 minutes as Coventry slipped into the relegation zone following the draw at Bramall Lane. Subsequently, Pressley was sacked on Monday morning. Elsewhere, young full-back Ben McLaughlin was involved in Telford’s 3-0 defeat away at Forest Green. It was another disappointing afternoon for the Conference’s bottom side who are now 10 points from safety. And up in Scotland, Conor Grant couldn’t prevent Motherwell from slipping to a 1-0 home loss against Dundee at Fir Park. The Steel Men are now joint bottom of the SPL, level on points with St Mirren and Ross County.
