Everton are told their £12million bid for James McCarthy of Wigan is not enough 13 Jul 2013 23:00 Roberto Martinez continues a raid on his old club, but Wigan insist that the Toffees' bid for McCarthy is £8million TOO LOWEverton boss Roberto Martinez will be told his £12million bid for Wigan midfielder James McCarthy is £8m too low, writes Alan Nixon of the Sunday People . The Goodison chief has already landed Arouna Kone and Antolin Alcaraz from his old club and also taken Joel Robles, who was on loan at Latics last season. Now the Toffees boss is set to go back for McCarthy after missing out on Victor Wanyama, who went to Southampton from Celtic. Martinez is baulking at the £14million price-tag Juventus have slapped on forward Alessandro Matri. The 27-year-old Italian, who has won five caps for Italy in the past two years, still has two years remaining on his contract in Turin.

We won't know if we're signing anybody else until Dave Whelan tells everybody. 20m for the player based on what? His average tally is 3 goals and the odd assist. Madness.

I'm surprised we offered as much as twelve as we don't have that kind of cash for one player unless we sell
