Everton fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Yuka Momiki’s eighth-minute opener decided the Women's Super League clash after the Blues failed to level the scores despite several good opportunities.
The Toffees dominated the ball in the East Midlands, but it was the hosts who took all three points.
Manager Brian Sorensen made one change to the side that were held to a 1-1 draw against West Ham United last time out. Veatriki Sarri returned to the starting XI, with Emma Bissell dropping to the bench.
The Foxes started on the front foot and scored what turned out to be the winner with eight minutes on the clock.
Played through by Shana Chossenotte, Momiki got past Justine Vanhaevermaet before slotting the ball beyond Courtney Brosnan.
Sorensen’s side responded well and searched for an immediate equaliser, which they almost found through Katja Snoeijs. Karoline Olesen swung in a dangerous free-kick after being fouled down the left flank. The Dane's cross was met by compatriot Sara Holmgaard at the far post. Her cutback found the feet of Snoeijs, who prodded the ball goalward but was thwarted by the diving Janina Leitzig.
Two minutes later, the shot-stopper came to Leicester’s rescue once more. Honoka Hayashi latched onto a long ball but saw the ball robbed from her feet by the keeper.
Snoeijs was lively throughout the first-half and was denied by the hosts’ number one again. Her half-volley rebounded off the German’s knee, much to the delight of the relieved home crowd.
The referee concluded a frustrating half for the visitors, who were behind despite controlling the tempo and creating the best chances.
Unfortunately, the second half was a similar story which started with Sarri squandering another golden opportunity. Snoeijs controlled a ball down the right before whipping an enticing ball across the face of goal. It travelled to the back-post and reached the Greece international, who failed to adjust in time and sent the ball over.
Another chance went begging on 62 minutes after Toni Payne burst down the right, leaving her marker in the dust. The forward delivered an excellent ball across the box but despite the sliding efforts of Sarri and Sara Holmgaard, the ball crept past the target.
The Toffees threw everything at it and almost salvaged a point late on through Vanhaevermaet. With 90 minutes on the clock, the Belgian raced in front of her marker and managed to meet Payne’s searching cross. Her header whisked inches wide of the post, though, summing a hard afternoon up.
Up next for the Blues is Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday 3 November (6:45pm GMT).
