Ex-Everton owner and chairman Peter Johnson has died at the age of 84. The Birkenhead-born businessman spent four years at Goodison Park’s helm after winning a takeover battle with Bill Kenwright’s consortium in 1994. Although Johnson’s premiership saw the Blues win the FA Cup a year later, it was offset by final-day battles for Premier League survival in 1994 and 1998. He relinquished control to Kenwright in 1999 after becoming unpopular with fans for selling striker Duncan Ferguson without Walter Smith’s approval. Either side of his time at Everton, Johnson had spells with Tranmere Rovers. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Peter Johnson, our chairman from 1994 to 1998 and for our FA Cup win in 1995,” .confirmed an Everton statement. “Our condolences go out to Peter’s family and friends at this sad time.”
