The Scottish Football Association is set to place limits on the amount of heading SPFL clubs can allow their players to do during training sessions, according to reports.
Clubs including Aberdeen, Cove Rangers and Peterhead would be required to alter their training plans. Concerns over the health of players have risen .in recent years, with studies over their likelihood of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia in later life producing alarming results, writes Football Scotland.
One such report by the University of Glasgow in 2019 showed that former footballers are three-and-a-half times more likely to die of the condition than those in the same age range in the general population.
The effect of head injuries on players has come into fresh focus as a result of the serious concussion Iran keeper Alireza Beiranvand suffered during his nation's defeat at the World Cup. And according to the Daily Mail, the latest development for our game will see Hampden chiefs direct SPFL clubs such as Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Hibs and more to limit heading practice in training to once a week.
The guidelines will reportedly also ban the use of exercises which encourage repeated heading of the ball from training on both the day before and after a game.
