Everton Football Club and the Everton Stakeholder Steering Group (ESSG) have confirmed their commitment to launch a Fan Advisory Board by the end of the 2021/22 season.
Club officials met with representatives from the ESSG, a coalition of independent supporters’ groups which represents more than 3,000 Evertonians, to push forward plans for how fans’ voices can be represented at the highest levels of Everton.
Under proposals from the ESSG the Fan Advisory Board will become a channel for in-depth consultation with the Club’s hierarchy, including Board members, with a focus on long-term strategic matters at the football club. At the latest meeting both parties confirmed their desire to launch the Fan Advisory Board before the end of the current season with the steering group now working on delivering a plan for how that will be achieved. Once operational, the Fan Advisory Board will shape the structure of fan representation at Board meetings, in conjunction with the Club.
The ESSG is an independent steering group made up of representatives from various Everton fan and stakeholder associations, including Everton Disabled Supporters’ Association, Everton Fans’ Forum, EFC Shareholders’ Association, EFC Supporters’ Club Committee, Everton Heritage Society, international fan groups from Asia-pacific, North America, and European regions as well as Football Supporters Association members.
Representatives from the ESSG are now working on the ‘terms of reference’ for the Fan Advisory Board. This will include the aims and objectives of the Fan Advisory Board and the clear, inclusive and independent process for the election of members - which will also be open to supporters unaffiliated to any fan groups.
The concept of a supporter committee or custodian group to advise the Board on key fan related matters was supported by 91% of the 10,000 supporters who responded to a survey issued by the Club in August 2021.

Voting to elect Evertonians to the Club's inaugural Fan Advisory Board will begin on Thursday (26 May).
The election will identify candidates to occupy the panel’s four 'unreserved' seats and join the seven members who will be democratically nominated by supporter groups making up the Everton Stakeholder Steering Group ('reserved' seats).
The application window for the Fan Advisory Board closed last week and, following that, a shortlisting process has identified 13 individuals who will be put forward for election.
The shortlisting panel comprised independent members and Evertonians Ellen Loudon (Director of Social Justice and Cannon Chancellor at Diocese of Liverpool) and Chris Matheson (MP for Chester), as well as Bridget Bryson and Bren Connolly representing the ESSG and Catherine Wright (Head of Governance) on behalf of the Club.
The 13 shortlisted candidates are: Tom Astley, Jazz Bal, Julie Clarke, Ian Craig, Shaun Ingram, John Jennings, Dave Kelly, Laura Hebden, James Holman, Thomas Morris, Timothy Ohlson, Stephen Tait and Tony Whittaker.
Photographs and biographies of the 13 candidates will be published on evertonfc.com at 2pm on Thursday, when voting will begin.
Any Evertonian who had a supporter number prior to 1 May 2022 will be eligible to vote and will be asked to select their four preferred candidates. Each vote will carry equal weight and supporters will be able to allocate a maximum of one vote per candidate.
The election, which is being independently verified by UK Engage, will identify successful candidates to serve in the following roles:
- One Everton Shareholder, to initially serve three years; - One Evertonian representing a minority group with a protected characteristic as defined in the Equality Act of 2010, to initially serve one year; - One Evertonian with no further eligibility requirements to initially serve three years; and - One Evertonian with no further eligibility requirements to initially serve one year.
Voting will close at 11.59pm on Thursday 9 June, with the four successful candidates to be confirmed on evertonfc.com once the verification process has been completed.
Once operational, Everton's Fan Advisory Board will be consulted on long-term strategic issues and will meet regularly with the Club’s hierarchy, including members of the Board of Directors.
The ESSG and the Club would like to thank everyone who submitted an application and offer its congratulations to those who have made the final shortlist.
