Chelsea hold on at Everton to maintain three-point WSL lead Chelsea maintained their three-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Women’s Super League thanks to a 1-0 win at Everton. The leaders held their advantage for 78 minutes after Magdalena Eriksson glanced a free-kick in off the bar. Everton were close to equalising with just three minutes to go when Angharad James saw Carly Telford off her line and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper, only to see it rebound off the bar. Second-placed Manchester City kept the pressure on the leaders by defeating Sunderland 3-0 at home. Georgia Stanway put City ahead after 14 minutes when she drove a powerful shot goalwards from the edge of the area, leaving goalkeeper Rachel Laws little chance. It took until the 87th minute for City to double their lead when Stanway got her second of the match, then substitute Nadia Nadim added some gloss to the result by scoring a third in injury-time. A sublime volley from Bethany England set Liverpool on their way to a 2-0 victory over Bristol City. England smashed in her opener in the 48th minute and the result was confirmed late on when Alex Greenwood converted a penalty after England was fouled in the area. Arsenal made light work of Reading as they came out 3-1 winners. Kim Little initiated proceedings by curling in a shot from outside the area to open the scoring. Dominique Janssen was the quickest to react in the box after Louise Quinn knocked down a header from a corner, allowing the Dutch international to steer the ball home for the second. Fara Williams reduced the deficit five minutes after the half-time break but Danielle van de Donk restored Arsenal’s two-goal advantage when she rounded the goalkeeper and slotted into the empty net. Bottom-of-the-table Yeovil Town picked up their first point of the season by drawing 0-0 at home against Birmingham City. Guardian

James: Woodwork Robbed Us Of Deserved PointAngharad James insists it would have been a deserved equaliser had her 87th-minute effort crept under the bar instead of coming back off the frame of the goal on Wednesday night. With Everton trailing to Chelsea defender Magdalena Eriksson’s 12th-minute header at the Marine Travel Arena, time was ticking towards the 90 as the Wales midfielder spotted Carly Telford off her line and chanced her arm from 20 yards. And she came within the width of the woodwork to restoring parity – and opening her Blue Girls account in some style. “I just thought to myself, ‘Let’s just go for it’,” James told evertonfc.com. “Everyone around me was screaming to shoot but I don’t really do it often enough – but then that’s probably why! “I hit it well but I remember thinking that it needed to drop. It was staying at a height and I knew that if it dipped then it was going in. I was gutted to see it come back off the bar because it would have been some way to score my first goal for Everton. “It would have been nice to get it so late in a game like that and to help us get a point that we probably deserved. But it wasn’t to be and we just move on now to the next one.” It was a case of the same old story for the Toffees – another resilient display full of character against a side closing in on the WSL 1 title. Having done similar in the reverse fixture back in late January – another 1-0 defeat – and throughout the campaign, James accepts that it has been a season of evolution for the Blue Girls. “We got at Chelsea but perhaps we could have played a lot more than we did,” she added. “I felt at times we played into their hands with longer balls that we were struggling to win in the air and we could have been a little bit smarter. “But we will learn from it and go again. We are a young team and we can’t forget that. We are building at the moment and learning at this level. “But it is looking positive – we are performing well and we are only narrowly missing out on results. It’s just coming down to one or two goals either way and we could be higher up the league. “But we are competing and if we can build on the foundation we are putting in place this season then we can shine in the next campaign.”

Spence Hails Blue Girls Despite Chelsea DefeatAndy Spence hailed the “fantastic effort” from his side as they were edged 1-0 by WSL 1 leaders Chelsea. Magdalena Eriksson’s 12th-minute header was the only goal of a keenly contested game, as the Blue Girls again went toe-to-toe with a side who have reached the Champions League semi-finals. And they could have snatched a deserved point late on when Angharad James’ shot came within the width of the crossbar of levelling matters in the 87th minute. But while the result was again a frustrating one, Spence was proud of his players as they again showed how much potential is in this young Everton side. “It was a fantastic effort from all the girls,” he said. “To face two of the top sides in this country – in Europe even - back-to-back [after playing Arsenal on Sunday] and produce a pair of displays like that speaks volumes for us as a Club. “The girls put in an incredible effort tonight but that doesn’t surprise me. It does disappoint me that again we are talking about a loss but it was by the small margins. We saw that late on when Angharad’s shot has hit the bar instead of going in. “Chelsea have got a team full of internationals – I have a really young group that are trying to learn the game at the highest level. So we are disappointed but I am immensely proud of the girls. It is hard to be encouraged when you are constantly talking about nearly getting results. “But when we let the dust settle, we will certainly look at ourselves and know we are a team with a lot of potential.” The Toffees are next in action when they travel to Reading on Sunday.
