Spence: We Don't Fear ArsenalLadies ready to square off against one of the league's biggest sides. Everton Ladies boss Andy Spence has insisted that his side are not scared of Arsenal as the two teams square off against each other at the Select Security Stadium on Sunday. The Gunners reigned supreme over the Women’s game for many years and still boast a wealth of attacking talent with the likes of Jordan Nobbs and FA Women’s Footballer of the Year Jodie Taylor, but Spence is adamant the Blue Girls will have enough to stop them. “They have so much talent. In attack they have, for me, probably five or six of the leading forwards in terms of variation and different qualities. “Last time out they scored seven, but we take confidence that Bristol in the game before drew with them and Bristol perhaps felt they should have come away with the victory. “We have to respect the quality they have, which I do with Arsenal being the leading light in women’s football for many years, but from our perspective its about respecting them but not fearing them. “We know what qualities they have but equally we know what areas we can exploit, and we will be certainly looking to stop them at one end, and hurt them at the other.” The Toffees will be looking to continue their good performances this season, with close defeats to Birmingham City and Manchester City followed up by a solid victory last time out against Doncaster Rovers Belles in the Continental Cup. “In the second half against Birmingham we were excellent, and probably should have come away with a win,” he added. “Against Manchester City we built on that really good second half display. “We had a crazy seven-minute spell but apart from that we were fantastic and again disappointed to not come away with at least a point. Leading into the Doncaster game we wanted to take all the good work we had done and get the win we deserved. “We managed the game really well, had some good spells and it was nice to see people getting on the scoresheet and keeping a clean sheet. All in all, it was a reinforcement of all the good work we have done Of course, when you get that win next to your name, everyone feels that much better.” Everton FC

Everton Ladies 0-2 ArsenalMiedema (23' minutes), Mead (78' minutes) Managerless Arsenal Women scored a goal in each half to beat Everton Ladies for their first Women's Super League One win since the season's opening day. In their first game since the departure of Pedro Martinez Losa, Arsenal went ahead through Vivianne Miedema's shot. Everton had a goal disallowed before half time for a foul on visiting goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal. Arsenal, led by acting boss Ismael Garcia, added a second Beth Mead's volley deceived Lizzie Durack. The result moved the London side back to fourth while Everton remain second-bottom, without a point this season. Dutch keeper Van Veenendaal denied Everton's Claudia Walker several times before Miedema's opener, which went in off the bar. Everton defender Georgia Brougham: "In the first half we created so many chances and we went in at half time and said that we need to take these chances when we go back out. "We came out for the second half and really started to play and push for that goal, but obviously it did not come. "Lizzie has always been excellent for us, a mistake does not change that. Throughout every single game she has been excellent and she is a great goalkeeper. "All of the players know how great she is and for 60 minutes she kept us in the game. Now everyone just needs to get around her and help her keep her head up." Arsenal midfielder Jordan Nobbs: "Everton came out positively at the start of the second half, but I still think that we were quite dominant on the ball. "We had to be aware of their threat in the second half but it is good that we have come out of this game with a clean sheet and with a positive win. "Defensively it was a huge performance. If we came away with a 2-1 win or something like that it just knocks that confidence, so for us to get a clean sheet it is a real positive." BBC

Everton were unlucky to lose at the Select Security Stadium as goals from Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead give Arsenal the three points. The Toffees began the game on the front foot with Claudia Walker forcing three saves from Arsenal goalkeeper Sari Van Veenedaal. After this bright start from the hosts, Arsenal began to get back into the game, creating chances of their own. Emma Mitchell came very close with a volley that sailed narrowly over the bar. Beth Mead also threatened, with quick feet she danced her way into the Everton box only to be thwarted by resolute defending. But on 22 minutes, the Gunners found an opener. Miedema controlled the ball on the penalty spot, shifting the ball to her left foot before unleashing a shot that bounced off the bar and into the net. The goal didn’t stop Everton’s threat though, Walker again looking dangerous and forcing Van Veenendaal into a sprawling save. At the other end, Jordan Nobbs then called Everton keeper, Lizzie Durack, into a fine stop from a free-kick. As the first half drew to a close, the Blue Girls had the ball in the net but the referee deemed there to be a foul on the goalkeeper and so the score stayed the same as the two sides went into the break. Everton started the second half as they had played in the first. One minute into the second period and captain Dan Turner came close with her shot from the edge of the box. Manager Andy Spence switched things round as he brought on both Angharad James and Siri Worm for Jodie Brett and Courtney Sweetman-Kirk. Dan Turner moved to left midfield where she twice she put in excellent crosses, the first going just over the head of Chloe Kelly and the second cleared away. But, with 77 minutes on the clock, Mead struck a volley from 35 yards that Durack couldn’t prevent from going into the net. Everton pushed for a goal to get back into the game but couldn’t find a way through Arsenal’s defence. Worm had the final chance of the game from a free kick 20 yards out that Walker had done well to win. A case of the same old story for the Toffees, a result that the performance did not deserve, however there is little time to dwell. They play Birmingham in the Continental Cup on Thursday. Everton FC
