Joe Williams got one over on a host of familiar faces as Barnsley earned their first points of the season with an impressive 3-0 victory against Sunderland on Saturday. The midfielder, who played the full 90 minutes on what was his sixth appearance for the Tykes, lined up against Everton teammate Tyias Browning and former colleagues Bryan Oviedo and Aiden McGeady. Brendan Galloway, who is also on loan at the Stadium of Light, missed the game having failed a late fitness test. It took Barnsley half an hour to go ahead at Oakwell but just four minutes after Ike Ugbo had broken the deadlock, Harvey Barnes netted to double the hosts’ advantage. And with Sunderland pushing to salvage something from the game, George Moncur slotted home a third to complete the scoring with 23 minutes still remaining. Injury meant Matthew Pennington missed the chance to come up against a Blues teammate at the County Ground but saw his loan side Leeds United record a 2-0 win over Kieran Dowell’s Nottingham Forest thanks to goals from Kemar Roofe and Ezgjan Alioski. Elsewhere, Antonee Robinson was an unused substitute as Bolton had a Friday night to forget, going down 4-0 at Hull City. The weekend’s results lift Williams’ Barnsley to 20th, three positions ahead of Robinson’s Bolton. Dowell’s Forest remain fourth despite their defeat, a place and a point above Pennington’s Leeds. Sunderland sit mid-table in 13th. Finally, Henry Onyekuru’s Anderlecht earned a goalless draw away at Gent but three straight games without victory leaves them 11th in the Jupiler Pro League.
