Everton Under-23s have been crowned Premier League 2 champions. The young Blues won the Division One title without kicking a ball on Monday night after closest-rivals Manchester City lost 3-2 against Liverpool at Prenton Park. The result means David Unsworth’s side are six points clear of second-placed City with both teams having just one match left to play this season – the Blues' finale being a Merseyside derby at Goodison on Monday, 8 May (7pm kick-off). That is a game Evertonians can come along and watch for free and also see the Under-23s lift the championship trophy. The title success in the inaugural Premier League 2 competition is just reward for the young Blues, with Unsworth’s team winning 15 of their 21 matches to date, losing just three in the process. Their championship win means Everton now boast the best Under-23 side in the country. The team will now look to end their campaign in style against Liverpool a week on Monday. Ahead of the 7pm kick-off there will be donation buckets around Goodison to help raise much-needed funds for the Under-23s ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is’ fundraising campaign which is seeking to raise £230,000 to house a living initiative for young people on the brink of homelessness across the city of Liverpool. The funds raised will be used to purchase, and operate, a house close to Goodison, which will offer 16 to 23-year-olds who have fallen on hard times, or have perhaps fallen out of the care system, a roof over their heads.

Unsworth: Proof We're Top For TalentUnder-23s coach says title success shows Blues lead the way.“Proud” Under-23s coach David Unsworth praised his players and staff and hailed their title success as further proof that Everton is the perfect place to develop young talent. The young Blues were crowned Premier League 2 champions on Monday night after Manchester City lost 3-2 to Liverpool, meaning Unsworth’s side cannot be caught at the top of the table with one match left to play. It has been a memorable campaign for Everton Under-23s who have set the pace for the majority of the season, all while young players like Tom Davies, Mason Holgate and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have been playing for the first team. Unsworth believes that shows further evidence of the Club leading the way in being able to develop talent – as he praised his team for a job well done. “I’m thrilled for the young players, they absolutely deserve it,” the former Blues defender told evertonfc.com. “We’ve been chased for a good part of the season. Fair play to Manchester City, they are a quality team but then so are we. “The character of our group of players was never in doubt. They hate getting beat, our staff hate it, too, and I’m thrilled for everyone, especially the lads. “It goes to show that this Club is the ideal place to be if you are a young player who wants to develop and progress. “Leicester winning the Premier League last season proved anything is possible and our team has been hungry for success, hungry to win. All credit to the players are staff. I’m so, so delighted for them.” As a proud Evertonian who played more than 300 games for the Club – including the victorious FA Cup final in 1995 – Unsworth has plenty of Goodison memories. But he insists the Under-23s title success is “right up there” with his list of achievements, and sees it as part of an exciting time for the Club. “It means everything,” added Unsworth. “We put in hours and hours of work and were desperate to succeed. My assistant John Ebbrell has been brilliant and I’m very proud of my staff. “It continues the feelgood factor at the Club. We’ve got an ambitious owner, a board aiming to get us to the top, hopefully a new stadium, and a manager who is doing a fantastic job and is not afraid to give youth a chance.”

Congrats, lads. I watched the 2-2 game v Chelsea and we should have won it there. John Joe Kenney put in some fine crosses and Beni Baningime looks really good. A tough tackler and composed on the ball.
