Born in Reykjavík, Gylfi played for hometown side Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar before joining Breiðablik and was an Icelandic under-17 international.

He had spent time on trial with Preston North End before signing for Reading on an Academy scholarship on 1 October 2005 and spent three years playing for the reserve teams before earning a professional contracts in 2007.

He had loan spells at Shrewsbury Town, and later Crewe Alexander, scoring in both debut games.

Gylfi joined 1899 Hoffenheim on 31 August 2010, and on 25th May 2011 was voted Hoffenheim's Fans' Player of the Season, despite only starting 13 games, finishing the season with 10 goals and 2 assists.

On 1 January 2012, after losing favour at Hoffenheim, it was announced that Gylfi would join Premier League club Swansea City on loan for the rest of the season, and subsequently won Premier League Player of the Month for March, becoming the first Icelander to do so.

A month later, Swansea agreed a fee of £6.8m to sign Sigurdsson on a permanent basis, but the deal fell through after 'then' manager Brendan Rodgers left Swansea to join Liverpool.

On 4 July 2012, Gylfi became the first signing of André Villas-Boas and joined Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £8.8 million.

In July 2014, Sigurdsson joined Swansea for a second spell when he arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in an exchange deal for Ben Davies.

On 2nd August 2014 he penned a new four year deal despite strong interest from Everton.

He was named Swansea player of the year in both 2015-16 and 2016-17, ending the latter with 9 goals and 13 assists which helped the Swans avoid relegation

However, Everton were not to be deterred, and Sigurdsson became the priority target of manager Ronald Koeman after uncertainties over the future of fellow midfielder Ross Barkley.

Despite a long drawn out negotiation, Koeman finally signed his man, and on 16th August 2017, Gylfi Sigurdsson became an Everton player signing a 5 year deal.

Gylfi was presented with Everton 'Goal Of The Season' at the 2018-19 end of season awards ceremony.

On 16th September 2020, Gylfi scored his 100th goal in English competition after Everton beat Salford City 3-0 in the League Cup.

Gylfi left Everton in June 2022 following the end of his contract.
