Everton Under-23s need nothing less than a victory against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday evening at Goodison to stand a chance of progressing in this season’s Premier League International Cup. The Young Blues head into their final group stage fixture sitting third in the table, one point behind their Spanish opponents who occupy second. Hertha Berlin have already sealed top spot but a win for Everton, which would take their points tally to six, could be enough to secure progression to the knockout rounds as one of the two best runners-up, alongside the six group winners. David Unsworth’s side head into the fixture on the back of an excellent 4-1 win against Leicester City in Premier League 2 last Monday - a result which elevated them back to the top of the table. Recent performances have fuelled belief amongst the squad that Everton can transfer their domestic form to the the International Cup. “We were outstanding against Leicester and have been throughout the season,” said defender Callum Connolly. “We are just looking to continue like that. “We are confident enough, we have got that desire to go on and the commitment to get there.” Versatile defender Connolly scored his first goal of the season against the Foxes last week. “It’s great to get off the mark,” he added. “Hopefully I can carry on and get a few more goals from now until the end of the campaign.” Everton FC

Everton Under-23s bowed out of the Premier League International Cup despite a good display against Athletic Bilbao. A win over Reading and a defeat to Hertha Berlin meant the young Blues needed to beat their Spanish visitors to have any chance of progressing to the next stage of the competition. They made the perfect start – Callum Connolly heading home on nine minutes. But after Jonjoe Kenny had seen a penalty saved, awarded after Harry Charsley was brought down, Athletic found an equaliser when Inigo Cordoba fired past Chris Renshaw. Both sides traded chances after the break but it was Bilbao who struck the decisive blow – Unai Nunez stabbing home from close range.
