Dominic Calvert-Lewin is hoping to go on a goalscoring run as Everton Under-23s look to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League 2 table on Monday evening. David Unsworth’s side travel to Southampton high on confidence after last weekend's impressive 1-0 win over Manchester City - the side who now sit one point behind the Toffees in the league table having played one game more. Summer signing Calvert-Lewin netted the only goal of the contest against the Citizens and is hoping that strike kick-starts a productive spell in front of goal. He told evertonfc.com: “It’s another big game for us against Southampton and we’re looking to build on what we did well against Manchester City. “Obviously, I was delighted to score in that game and now I’m looking to start stringing a few more goals together in consecutive games. “I feel confident but goals only increase that feeling and hopefully I can keep helping the team get the wins we all want.”

Everton Under-23s were held to a 1-1 draw at Southampton’s Staplewood Training Ground on Monday evening. The young Blues, who were dominant throughout, opened the scoring 11 minutes before the half-time interval when Oumar Niasse emphatically rifled home Jonjoe Kenny’s cross. But the lead lasted little more than 60 seconds as Olufela Olomola found the back of the net via the the inside of the post to level proceedings. David Unsworth’s side continued to apply pressure throughout the game, with half chances falling to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Callum Connolly. The Toffees also had a big appeal for a penalty turned down when substitute Harry Charsley went down inside the area. But the Saints stood firm, meaning Everton would be forced to settle for a draw that sees them extend their lead at the top of the Premier League 2 table to two points.

Unsworth: We Deserved MoreDavid Unsworth felt his Everton Under-23s warranted more than a point after being held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton at Staplewood on Monday evening.Oumar Niasse’s sixth goal of the Premier League 2 season - an emphatic half volley - was cancelled out less than a minute later by Saints striker Olufela Olomola. The young Blues dominated proceedings throughout but failed to convert their pressure into a winning goal against a resilient Southampton defence. Despite frustration at the timing and manner of the hosts’ equaliser, coach Unsworth was pleased to see his team extend their lead at the top of the table to two points. “I thought we were by far the better team and we dominated the whole game,” he told evertonfc.com. “I’m not disappointed because I felt we played well against a good, well-organised Southampton outfit but I always want a bit more and the players have set such high levels that I feel perhaps we should have gone on and won it. “We’d worked so hard to get in front. We started the game very positively and looked bright, then they came back into it a little bit, but we dealt with that and got the goal with a great cross from Jonjoe Kenny and a great finish from Oumar Niasse. “But then to concede a sloppy goal less than a minute later hurt us. They got a bit of a lucky break, we switched off and, all of a sudden, it’s 1-1. “We should have had a penalty in the second half. There was a blatant clip on Harry Charsley’s legs and that could have been the moment we needed that would get us the win. “But, overall, it was a very good performance with some outstanding individual displays from the likes of Jonjoe Kenny, Liam Walsh and Tom Davies, who were as good as I’ve ever seen them.” Unsworth has now challenged his players to maintain their high standards week-in, week-out as they approach the second half of the campaign on top of the league. He added: “It’s great to be top of the table going into December. We always want performances and we always want wins. “Of course it’s about producing players for our first team but, as I’ve always said and as I preach every single day, an Everton player has to win games as well. “On the whole, the performances have been fantastic so far this season and we’ve performed very well for 90 per cent of the games. We have dropped a bit below that standard a couple of times, so now we want to see those standards met even more consistently. “It’s important for me to see the players push the high standards they have already set themselves, to see them learning all of the time and to see them working their socks off every time they put on that Everton shirt whether it be in training or in a game.” Everton FC
