Everton Connection Helping Young Lions The Everton connection has helped England reach the quarter-finals of the Under-20s World Cup.That’s the opinion of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jonjoe Kenny, who both believe the day-to-day work at Finch Farm is bearing fruit for the Young Lions 5,000 miles away over in South Korea. All five of the Everton players in the England squad have made contributions at the tournament so far, none more so than in the 2-1 victory over Costa Rica on Tuesday. Toffees frontman Ademola Lookman scored both goals, with Kenny providing the assist for the first and Calvert-Lewin for the second. “We all get on well - me, Ademola, Cal Connolly, Kieran Dowell and Dom Calvert-Lewin,” Kenny said. “We get on well for our club and now it’s working well for our country.” Lookman’s first goal in the last-16 tie was scored after a typical surging run-and-centre from the right by full-back Kenny. Calvert-Lewin did equally well for the ex-Charlton man’s second strike - striding past his defender before picking him out with a precise cut-back. “We all know each other off the pitch and I think that helped us on the pitch the other day as well,” added Calvert-Lewin. “For the second goal, I’ve heard a shout from Ade. I knew that he would be on the edge of the box so I didn’t have to look. I’ve knocked it back, luckily found him and he’s put it in the net. “We train together every day for our club so we are building up a good relationship. When we play together now we know where each other are a lot of the time, so it wasn’t hard for me to find him for the second goal.” England are now just three wins away from World Cup glory. Mexico lie in wait in the quarter-finals on Monday (11am kick-off UK). “We’ve got to take every game as it comes,” said a confident, yet grounded, Kenny. “The next game is against Mexico - hopefully we can keep getting further and further.” Everton FC

Mason Holgate has been included in the England Under-21s squad for the upcoming European Championships. The defender has been named in the 23-man party that will travel to Poland later this month. Holgate, 20, made his competitive Everton debut at the start of the 2016/17 season and went on to play 21 matches in all competitions for the Blues. England have been drawn alongside hosts Poland, Slovakia and Sweden in Group A of the 12-nation tournament, which runs from 16-30 June. “I started to get into the England squad since I broke in with Everton last year, so I haven’t played at a major tournament yet,” Holgate said. “It’s something I’m looking forward to. “I feel like the squad we have and its potential, we’ve got to be looking at getting through the group and going on to win it.” Meanwhile, Wales captain Ashley Williams has also been called up for their World Cup qualifier against Serbia on Sunday, taking place in Belgrade. Wales currently sit third in Group D after five matches, four points behind leaders Serbia. Everton

England booked their place in the semi-finals of the Fifa Under-20 World Cup for the first time since 1993 after a Dominic Solanke goal gave Paul Simpson’s side victory over Mexico in South Korea. Solanke, who is set to join Liverpool on a free transfer from Chelsea, scored the only goal of the game just after the break to set up a showdown with Italy in the last four. Tottenham forward Josh Onomah was shown a second yellow card 18 minutes from time for what appeared to be an innocuous challenge on his opposite number but England held on and will now face the Azzurri on Thursday for a place in the final on Sunday. Everton’s England Under-20 quintet have a World Cup semi-final to look forward to after the Young Lions beat Mexico 1-0 on Wednesday. Kieran Dowell, Jonjoe Kenny and Ademola Lookman all started the quarter-final victory in South Korea. Dominic Calvert-Lewin came off the bench in the second half, while Callum Connolly was an unused substitute. Dominic Solanki netted the winner for England in the 48th minute. The 1-0 success sets up a meeting with Italy in the semi-finals on Thursday (12pm kick-off, UK time). It’s the first time England have reached that stage of an Under-20s World Cup in 24 years, since the Young Lions finished third at the 1993 tournament, held in Australia.
