Joe Williams is expected to be out of action for a period of around six months after injuring the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. The Everton Under-21s captain suffered the setback in the Young Blues’ final match of the season against Chelsea and underwent reconstructive surgery last week. David Unsworth is confident that the 19-year-old will make a speedy recovery from his injury. “Unfortunately Joe picked up an injury in the final Under-21s game against Chelsea,” said Unsworth. “He got injured after 20 minutes and, typical of Joe, he carried on, played the full 90 and was man of the match. “We found out afterwards he had injured his knee, his LCL. He’s already had his operation and he’s on the road to recovery. “He’s been outstanding all season and quite rightly won the Under-21s Player of the Season, which we will present to him when he is back on his feet. “He’s got a lot of work to do now in the gym and a lot of rehab work to get fit. But he will get through it - he’s a great lad and we wish him speedy recovery.”

It's rotten luck to get it in the last game but at least he'll spend most of his time off in the summer.

Everton teenager Joe Williams hits the gym as he steps up recovery from injuryBlues under-21s captain aiming to defy medical opinion and return ahead of scheduleEVERTON teenager Joe Williams is stepping his recovery after undergoing ankle surgery. The Blues’ under-21s captain damaged his lateral collateral ligament in the final game of the season against Chelsea in May. Medical experts said Williams would be out for at least six months but the Huyton midfielder is targeting a return to action before mid-November. And the 19-year-old has posted this short video on Twitter to provide an update on his rehabilitation. Williams, who suffered the injury inside the first 20 minutes of the game with Chelsea but managed to complete the full 90, cancelled his holiday in order to concentrate on his recovery. Under-21s boss David Unsworth said: “He’s been outstanding all season and quite rightly won the Under-21s Player of the Season, which we will present to him when he is back on his feet. “He’s got a lot of work to do now in the gym and a lot of rehab work to get fit. But he will get through it - he’s a great lad and we wish him speedy recovery.”

Everton midfielder faces spell on sidelines after ankle operationJoe Williams suffers set-back after picking up problem in behind-closed-doors friendlyLuckless Joe Williams faces an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury. The Everton midfielder is set to miss the next couple of month after undergoing an operation on the problem sustained in a behind-closed-doors friendly. Everton played Wigan Athletic at Finch Farm last month and it was there that Williams picked up the injury. The 19-year-old had only recently returned from a major knee injury sustained at the end of last season. Everton under-23 boss David Unsworth said: “He had started his comeback and was looking great. But unfortunately in that Wigan game he has taken a knock and it is a different injury. “It looks like he is going to be out for a few months now. “He is not having much luck at the moment but he will work hard in the gym and he will be back before we know it.” Liv Echo
