It was a positive start to life in English football for Felipe Mattioni at the weekend. The defender, who was signed by Everton on a short-term contract earlier this month then loaned straight to Doncaster, made his Rovers debut in their 2-0 FA Cup first round win against Stalybridge Celtic. The 27-year-old played the full match, along with fellow Toffees loanee Conor Grant. However, there were contrasting fortunes in the same cup competition for both Francisco Junior and Russell Griffiths. Midfielder Junior was substituted after an hour as Wigan Athletic crashed out with a 4-0 defeat at Bury. There was a similar scoreline at The Shay where goalkeeper Griffiths, on his Halifax Town debut, could not prevent the non-league side losing 4-0 to Wycombe Wanderers. It was also a disappointing afternoon for Luke Garbutt, whose loan side Fulham were beaten 5-2 at home by Birmingham City in the Championship. The left-back came off the bench to play the last quarter of an hour at Craven Cottage. After the defeat, Fulham manager Kit Symons was sacked, with the Cottagers placed 12th in the Championship table. Lower down English football’s pyramid, James Graham played 75 minutes as Evo-Stik League Premier Division side Colwyn Bay halted a five-game losing streak with a 1-1 draw against Halesowen Town. Meanwhile, Conor McAleny didn’t play for Charlton Athletic in their 3-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday. The striker has now returned to Everton following the completion of his two-month loan spell at the Valley.
