Emmanuel Adebayor is now a free agent.

Tottenham confirmed they have released the Togo international after coming to an agreement over the termination of his contract.

A club statement read: "We can confirm that we've reached a mutual agreement with Adebayor which will see him released from his contract with the club.

"We wish Emmanuel well for the future."

The Tottenham striker tweeted: "I can confirm that I have reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur to terminate my contract.

I wish to thank the club and the fans for my time there and I wish them well for the forthcoming season.

The former Arsenal forward was close to leaving in the summer but pulled out of a deal to join Aston Villa after complaining he wanted to stay in London.

And a mooted move to West Ham also collapsed despite late talks with Slaven Bilic.

Adebayor joined Tottenham on loan from Manchester City in 2011 before signing on a permanent basis the following summer in a £5million deal.

But the enigmatic striker has fallen out of favour under Mauricio Pochettino and has played just five games in 2015. His last appearance came at the beginning of May.

Although a free agent, Adebayor is not able to join another club until January after being registered in Tottenham's Premier League squad.

"We gave him the opportunity to train with the first team," Pochettino said, "but at different times. But he decided to train with the Under 21s. Always we give him the same opportunity to train and treat him the same as any other player.

"I don’t have an opinion about this because it is a personal thing. Everyone is different. I cannot give an opinion. It is his preference. The question is for him, it is not for me. I was always good with him."
