Matthew Pennington looks set to be involved in a dramatic final day of League One action for Coventry City next weekend. The young defender was part of the Sky Blues team that were beaten at 3-1 home by Crewe Alexandra on Saturday – a result which still leaves them in danger of relegation. Pennington played the first 45 minutes before being substituted at half-time. A draw for Coventry at Crawley next Sunday, though, should be enough to keep them up. The pressure is off John Lundstram, however, as Scunthorpe ensured they will be playing League One football next season by beating Gillingham 2-1. The midfielder completed the full game in a match that, at one stage, had to be stopped for 27 minutes due to torrential rain. Injury kept Francisco Junior out of Port Vale’s 2-1 win at already-relegated Yeovil Town. The Valiants also enter the last round of fixtures safe in the knowledge they cannot be demoted. It was contrasting fortunes for George Green and Tranmere. Rovers lost their Football League status following their 3-2 defeat at Plymouth Argyle. Green was brought on with half an hour remaining but it proved to be a disappointing end for the Wirral club. Gethin Jones was an unused substitute for the hosts. Meanwhile, in the Championship, Chris Long and Conor McAleny were not involved for Brentford and Cardiff City respectively. The Bees kept up their faint hopes of a play-off berth with a 2-0 away win at Reading. They now sit two points off sixth-placed Derby County with one match to play. Cardiff beat rock-bottom Blackpool 3-2 in the Bluebirds’ final home match of the campaign. And north of the border, Conor Grant was on the bench but not involved in Motherwell’s 2-0 victory at Hamilton on Friday night. The midfielder was given some match action for the Steelmen’s Under-20s side on Monday afternoon, however. He scored the team’s second in a 2-0 win over Partick Thistle.
