League One and Two clubs welcome new proposalThe Football League’s proposal to allow Premier League B teams to play in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy has received almost overwhelming backing from League One and League Two clubs .The idea of allowing Premier League B-teams to play in a new Football League division was floated last year by a Football Association commission convened by the chairman, Greg Dyke, to try and improve the prospects of England’s national side. He reasoned that allowing top-flight clubs to field B-teams in the League would allow more young English players to come through the system. The idea was roundly rejected by Football League clubs and provoked a backlash from fans. However, an alternative proposal to allow B-teams in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy has been suggested instead. Minutes from a meeting of the AFC Wimbledon supporter’s trust revealed that the matter had been discussed at a recent Football League meeting at which the south London club were the only League Two club against leaving the idea on the table. Football League executives will now work on the detail of the proposal, as well as continuing to consider other ideas arising from the commission, before a likely vote at its summer meeting of all 72 clubs. The campaign group Against League 3, which was set up to fight against the entry of B teams into the football pyramid, said the idea would set “a dangerous precedent”. “It further benefits the Premier League over the Football League and diminishes an already ailing competition into nothing more than a playground experiment.” Instead of allowing Premier League B-teams, AL3 says it favours new rules to stop Premier League sides “hoarding” young talent and changes to the home-grown players rule to lower the age of eligibility.
