Everton Under-21s continue their Premier League International Cup campaign when they take on Spanish side Villarreal at Goodison Park on Wednesday night. Having drawn 1-1 at home to Celtic in their opening group match, the young Blues will be looking to make it two wins in a week after beating Southampton in league action on Monday. They face a side constructed from the Yellow Submarine’s ‘B’ and ‘C’ sides, who kicked off their involvement in the International Cup with a 0-0 draw with Sunderland only to then lose at Celtic. However, Unsworth predicts a tough battle at Goodison Park. “I am really looking forward to the game,” Unsworth told evertontv. “It is a different type of fixture for us and it is always nice for the players to play at Goodison. “It will be a really great occasion for the lads – it is what they dream of doing, playing in big games at Goodison. “So we will sample that, we will enjoy it but it will be a really tough test against a very good Villarreal side. “We have watched a couple of their games recently and they are a really good team. But so are we.” Kick-off is 7pm, with admission free for Season Ticket holders and FOREVERTON members and £5 for adults and £3 for concessions otherwise.

Watching this might be less painful tonight if our team is anything to go off.

EVERTON 1 VILLARREAL 2SYLVAIN DISTIN was an over-age player for Everton Under-21s who narrowly lost to their Spanish counterparts at Goodison Park in the Premier League International Cup. Having drawn 1-1 at home to Celtic in their opening group match, the young Blues chances of reaching the quarter-final stages were rocked by a late goal by Francisco Sol on Wednesday night. Villarreal kicked off their involvement in the International Cup with a 0-0 draw with Sunderland but then lost at Celtic. Everton trailed to the game’s first meaningful attack - a slick passing move culminating in left-winger Pedraza finding space on the edge of the area, pivoting and burying into the Gwladys Street goal with only three minutes played. But showing great character David Unsworth’s young charges hit back through David Henen’s header in the 55th minute, only for Sol’s well-placed shot a quarter of an hour from the end to break their hearts. The defeat means Everton must beat Sunderland in their final group game at the start of March to be in with a shout of making it into the last-eight of the competition.
