Sam Allardyce labelled Manchester United a long-ball team after they snatched an injury-time equaliser to draw 1-1 at West Ham on Sunday.West Ham looked on course for a deserved victory following Cheikhou Kouyaté’s imaginative strike on 49 minutes but United salvaged a point when Daley Blind struck in the third minute of added time after Carl Jenkinson had failed to fully clear Marcos Rojo’s hopeful punt into the area. Louis van Gaal claimed United deserved to draw on the back of their “fantastic” second-half display but Allardyce dubbed them “long-ball United” before adding: “You might criticise Louis van Gaal for playing long balls as much as I am sometimes criticised for being direct. In the end it’s paid off for them. “We had many opportunities and I think it was a great shame we conceded that game as late as we did, which wasn’t the normal goal you concede against Manchester United. Just a punt up the middle.” Van Gaal was critical of the way United failed to win second balls during the first half but insisted they were the better team after the break. “We created a lot of chances. We could’ve won this game. We need guts to play football along the floor and that we have done in the second half.” He was critical of Mark Clattenburg’s decision to send off Luke Shaw for two bookable offences and conceded his team had missed an opportunity to close the gap to second-place Manchester City to three points following their draw with Hull on Saturday.
