Newcastle defeat struggling Hull City to earn first win for John Carver Hull 0 - 3 Newcastle
Remy Cabella 40 Sammy Ameobi 50 Yoan Gouffran 78 John Carver celebrated his first match in permanent charge of Newcastle with a comfortable victory at relegation-threatened Hull. Five days after being appointed until the end of the season, Carver’s side managed something they had failed to do under him in caretaker capacity as Hull’s defensive vulnerability was clinically exposed on three occasions. Newcastle overcame early dominance from their hosts, which included Michael Dawson powering a far-post header wide of the mark from a Gaston Ramírez free-kick and Fabricio Coloccini blocking on the goal-line after goalkeeper Tim Krul had only half-stopped another aerial effort from Curtis Davies, to take a 40th-minute lead. French midfielder Rémy Cabella seized on a loose pass out of defence from Andrew Robertson, manoeuvred the ball onto his left foot and thrashed it past Allan McGregor from just outside the area. The corresponding fixture last season witnessed former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew headbutt Hull midfielder David Meyler, an indiscretion that resulted in a hefty fine and seven-match touchline ban. This year’s inappropriate behaviour came from the home team, however, as Ahmed Elmohamady attempted to con an equalizer just before the break. Having won a free-kick on the right flank, the Egyptian full-back then emerged from a posse of bodies to turn the ball beyond Krul, only for his celebratory charge to Steve Bruce on the touchline to be followed by a yellow card for the deliberate use of a hand to convert. Instead of clawing the game back to a 1-1 scoreline, though, Hull found themselves playing catch-up two goals behind after having their pocket pinched a second time soon after the re-start. This time it was Sammy Ameobi who took advantage of the space to dispatch a swerving shot past McGregor from 25 yards. In howling wind and rain, Hull struggled to fashion a response and it was the conditions that contributed to their nearest miss as Coloccini’s sliced clearance from a corner travelled over the stranded Krul’s head and had to be hacked off the goal-line by the impressive Vurnon Anita. Then, from their only other clear-cut chance, just after the hour, Nikica Jelavic failed to tap into an exposed after Gaston Ramirez’s cross-shot was deflected into the centre of the six-yard box by a sprawling Krul. And Newcastle’s greater incisiveness in the final third was summed up when substitute Yoa n Gouffran drove at the heart of the Hull defence a dozen minutes from time and was rewarded when his shot bobbled off Elmohamady’s attempted block to wrong-foot McGregor.
