West Ham hope to sign Darren Fletcher on a free from Manchester United• Contract expires in summer and Hammers hope for early release • Hammers waiting for permission to talk terms with Scot • Transfer window – live Darren Fletcher is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and out of contract in the summer. West Ham United want to sign Darren Fletcher on a free transfer from Manchester United and the east London club are hopeful the midfielder can be released early from his contract, which expires in the summer. Fletcher earns around £90,000 a week so would be due close to £1.8m in the last five months of his deal, from February to the end of June. United would have to weigh up whether this saving would counterbalance any minimal fee the club would receive if Fletcher were sold. Given that Fletcher has made a recovery from a serious bowel problem that threatened his career, any contract the Scot would sign at West Ham, if he were to join, might be on a reduced basic wage and heavily incentivised regarding appearances. While Sam Allardyce believes there is a 50-50 chance of the transfer occurring it is understood there will be no resolution by the end of Monday, with negotiations due to go into Tuesday, at least. If the West Ham manager could bring Fletcher to the club it would represent something of a coup. The Scot was made Manchester United’s vice-captain by Louis van Gaal and a player who has won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups would add vast experience to West Ham’s tilt at qualifying for European football. Allardyce’s side are seventh, only four points behind Manchester United in fourth, so Fletcher’s addition would also be a boost to the Hammers’ outside prospects of achieving Champions League football for the first time.

UPDATE:
Darren Fletcher set to sign for West Ham from Manchester United
Darren Fletcher looks set to sign for West Ham United after the Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal, announced the midfielder was in London for talks. Fletcher was named United’s vice-captain at the start of the season but has been unable to break into Van Gaal’s first team and now looks set to move to the capital.
“Darren Fletcher is now in West Ham, I believe,” Van Gaal said. “So we have to wait and see.” Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend Read more
The Scot, 30, was undergoing a medical and Van Gaal admitted he would miss the midfielder, who has played 342 times for the club he joined as a schoolboy 20 years ago. “He is my third captain. He is an important guy in the dressing room. I like him as a human being and as a player. We shall miss him,” Van Gaal said.
“But he has not played so many times. I think always that is the main goal of a player. We have talked about that. He prefers to play. Therefore we have helped him to go away.
“For us, it is a miss, a loss. For the club who bought him, it is another player with a lot of qualities, as a midfielder and as a captain. He is a very experienced player.”
