The Glovers weren’t about to roll over against their Premier League opponents and in the end it took summer signings worth £89million to defeat them as Angel di Maria and Ander Herrera struck in the second period for Louis van Gaal's side.
Gary Johnson's men weren’t about to be negative as they welcomed their top flight opponents and Joe Edwards saw an early attempt fly wide of David De Gea’s goal, while Wayne Rooney did the same with another chance.
A nasty clash of heads between Kieffer Moore and Paddy McNair unsettled the Manchester United defence further and Yeovil sought to target the youngster.
Referee Craig Pawson was then kept busy as he turned down a Glovers appeal when the dazed McNair handled the ball and he then waved play on when it looked like Radamel Falcao had been hauled down as he chased a ball over the top.
Yeovil should have taken the lead in the second half as they continued to push the Red Devils all the way but as the ball dropped to Moore in the penalty area he could only tamely scuff a strike into De Gea’s gloves.
And Moore was left to rue his miss as just minutes later Herrera, when Darren Fletcher’s pass deflected into his path, spun and thumped a swerving strike into the back of the net, which left Jed Steer flapping at fresh air.
Argentine international Di Maria was thrown into the fray as Van Gaal looked to snatch victory but his first real action was to head an Edwards effort off the goal-line.
Meanwhile, Moore saw another shot hit Chris Smalling before sailing wide of the upright as Yeovil refused to give up.
But as the Glovers pushed for an elusive equaliser they allowed Manchester United to counter in the game’s final minute and the deadly Di Maria gently clipped the ball over Steer and into the net to seal their progression.
